MarketBeat Open returns to Sanford Sports Complex in Oct.

SIOUX FALLS –
The ATP professional men’s tennis tour is returning to Huether Family Match Pointe on the Sanford Sports Complex this October as the ATP Tour has renewed the MarketBeat Open for year three. Taking place October 25-November 1, the tournament will once again be an ATP Challenger 100 event after being upgraded in 2025.

In just the first two years of hosting the event in Sioux Falls, many of the up-and-coming bright stars of the ATP Tour have already made their way through Sioux Falls. In 2026 at the year’s first major, the Australian Open, 12 MarketBeat Open participants competed – with seven making the second round and two advancing to the third round. Just four months after winning the 2025 MarketBeat Open singles title, American Patrick Kypson defeated the sixth-ranked player in the world, Alex de Minaur, at the ATP 500 event in Acapulco, Mexico.

“It’s been really exciting to see the success of the guys that have played here,” said Tournament Director Mark Vellek. “It’s been a really energizing thing for the tennis community here to see these guys up close on the courts they play on themselves and get to know the players and then watch them on TV throughout the year and track their success. Our first two years have really shown people the true world-class level of tennis this event brings to Sioux Falls.”

The Sanford Sports Complex plays host to a number of large sporting events throughout the year, and the MarketBeat Open adds to the pride the campus has for hosting premier sporting events which have elevated the competitive sports scene in Sioux Falls.

“We’re excited to help bring back the MarketBeat Open for the third consecutive year,” said MarketBeat Founder and CEO Matt Paulson. “We love that world-class tennis players come to compete in our growing city. This tournament is a great way to show Sioux Falls off to the world.”

The MarketBeat Open is an ATP Challenger and USTA Pro Circuit event and has the USTA excited for its future after quickly earning a reputation as a premier ATP Challenger event in just two years.

“The MarketBeat Open has quickly established itself as a marquee event during a vital part of the USTA Pro Circuit calendar, and we’re excited to see that continue for a third consecutive year,” said Jo Wallen, managing director, National & Global Events, USTA. “The Sanford Sports Complex is a world-class campus. The community in Sioux Falls has been tremendously supportive, and the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge will once again add an extra level of significance to competition that is already top-flight.”

The Road to Melbourne will run through Sioux Falls this fall again as the MarketBeat Open will be part of the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge for the third straight year. The Australian Open Wild Card Challenge lasts five weeks during which the American with the highest-ranking point total in their top three tournaments will earn a wild card directly into the main draw at the Australian Open in January.

The MarketBeat Open will feature 32 of the top singles players in the world as well as 16 doubles teams. Notable past participants include 2018 Australian Open semifinalist Kyle Edmund, grand slam doubles champions Jordan Thompson and Rinky Hijikata, 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Christopher Eubanks, along with a number of rising stars on tour which include Ethan Quinn, Rafa Jodar, Martin Damm Jr., Darwin Blanch and Elliot Spizzirri.

“My experience playing at the Sioux Falls Challenger last year was great,” said Jodar, who just captured his first ATP 250 title this month and has had a meteoric rise up the world rankings. “It was one of my first 100 level events, and I really enjoyed my time there. The organization made us feel very comfortable during the week.”

Kypson won last year’s MarketBeat Open title over Great Britain’s Johannus Monday in a thrilling three-set final. Kypson’s win in Sioux Falls helped win him the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge that earned him a spot in the main draw at the year’s first major. Hijikata and Mac Kiger won the doubles event in 2025 adding to Hijikata’s stellar doubles career that also includes an Australian Open doubles title in 2023 as well as a runner-up finish at Wimbledon in 2025.

“Sioux Falls has become one of my favorite stops on the ATP Challenger Tour,” Kypson said. “The hospitality is great, and they take great care of the players. The facilities are great, and they have some really friendly and professional staff.”

The player field will be determined 21 days ahead of the start of the event. Tickets for the MarketBeat Open will go on sale July 17. Sponsorships are on sale now. For sponsorship information, contact Mark Vellek at mark@playthepointe.com. More information can be found at MarketBeatOpen.com.

#NursesLightUpTheSky initiative aims to unite community in shared message of support

BISMARCK, N.D. –  In honor of National Nurses Week, May 6-12, local businesses across the community are invited to take part in a highly visible show of appreciation by lighting their buildings, storefronts or signage with red lights to thank nurses for their compassion, dedication and service.

The initiative, known as #NursesLightUpTheSky, aims to unite businesses, health care organizations and residents in a shared message of gratitude for nurses who care for patients and families every day.

“Lighting up red is a simple but powerful way for businesses to say ‘thank you’ to nurses who are always there when our community needs them most,” said Wendy Kopp, Ph.D, chief nursing officer, Sanford Bismarck. “When our community lights up the sky together, it sends a clear message that nurses are valued and supported.”

Businesses may participate for one night or throughout the full week of Nurses Week by illuminating exterior or interior lighting in red. Participants are also encouraged to share photos and messages of appreciation on social media using the hashtag #NursesLightUpTheSky.

National Nurses Week begins on May 6, National Nurses Day, and concludes on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The annual observance recognizes the essential role nurses play in delivering high-quality care and supporting the health and well-being of communities.

Community members can expect to see buildings glowing red throughout the city as businesses, organizations and landmarks join the effort to honor nurses in a meaningful and memorable way.

The Sanford Health Bismarck Region provides health care to central and western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northern South Dakota. It includes 26 clinics in Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, Dickinson, Williston and Watford City, as well as a Level II trauma center located in Bismarck.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Emerging forces reshaping health care – including AI, innovation, workforce challenges and financial sustainability –  are driving rapid transformation, and two Sanford Health leaders will bring their perspectives to keynote panel discussions at the upcoming Becker’s Healthcare 16th Annual Meeting.

The four-day conference takes place April 13-16 in Chicago. Sanford Health’s Tommy Ibrahim, M.D., MBA, MHA, executive vice president and chief transformation officer and Brad Reimer, chief technology and digital officer, will join executives from the nation’s top health systems.

Ibrahim will join a keynote panel discussion, C-suite Reboot: What Health Systems Need for the Next 5 Years focused on how C-suite leaders are reimagining strategy, structure and leadership to meet the demands of the next five years.

“The next five years will require health system leaders to fundamentally rethink how we structure our organizations, develop our workforce and lead through rapid transformation,” said Ibrahim. “At Sanford Health, that means building an AI-ready workforce, putting strong governance in place to earn trust and staying disciplined about solving the right problems – so we can move forward with innovation while keeping the human connection at the center of care.”

The panel will be moderated by Molly Gamble, vice president, editorial at Becker’s Healthcare. Other confirmed speakers include Ramin Davidoff, M.D., co-chief executive officer at The Permanente Federation; Stephen Motew, M.D., MHA, FACS, president and chief executive officer at UF Health and Munjal Shah, co-founder and chief executive officer at Hippocratic AI.

Reimer will participate in an opening keynote panel called Predicting AI’s Impact as Healthcare Continues Big Shifts. He will be joined by Jeff Gautney, senior vice president and chief information officer for Rush University System for Health and Sunil Dadlani, executive vice president, chief information & digital officer and chief cyber security officer for Atlantic Health System. Reimer’s panel discussion will be moderated by Laura Dyrda, editor-in-chief at Becker’s Healthcare.

“As health care undergoes rapid change, the real opportunity with AI is to apply it in ways that meaningfully improve both the patient and clinician experience,” said Reimer. “That requires balancing speed with discipline – ensuring strong governance, aligning every investment to our mission and building the capabilities, including forward-deployed engineering and agentic platforms, to scale innovation responsibly and effectively.”

This is the fifth consecutive year Sanford Health leaders have taken part in the Becker’s Annual Meeting.

Sanford receives verification from ACS Committee on Trauma

Verification recognizes Sanford Bismarck’s commitment to providing optimal care for injured patients

BISMARCK, N.D. –  The trauma center at Sanford Health in Bismarck has been verified as a Level II trauma center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT).

Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and the highest level of institutional performance, as outlined by the ACS COT in its current manual, Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient.

“Receiving Level II Trauma Verification reflects our deep commitment to the patients, families and communities we serve,” said Amy Eberle, trauma program manager, Sanford Bismarck. “It is attributed to the dedication and teamwork of our physicians, nurses, EMS and support staff who work together every day to provide high-quality care when it matters most. We are proud to stand ready to care for injured patients and support their families when every second matters.”

There are three levels of ACS trauma center verification, each defined by specific standards that speak to the important roles of the center in serving its community. These standards clarify the care that must be available to the injured patient at the facility, along with other expectations related to research and educational contributions to advance the field and to ensure the availability of highly qualified trauma providers in the future.

The ACS Trauma Verification, Review and Consultation (VRC) Program helps hospitals to evaluate and improve their trauma care. It provides an objective, external review of a trauma center’s resources and performance. A team of trauma experts completes a site review of the hospital. The team assesses relevant components of the program including their regional role(s), the availability of physical and health human resources, policies, patient care protocols and the hospital’s quality improvement processes. Of note, patients cared for in ACS-verified trauma centers have a lower risk of death and improved quality of life compared with patients in non-verified centers.

Importantly, the ACS does not designate trauma centers. Instead, it verifies compliance with the standards listed in the manual, Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient. A facility earns the title of “designated trauma center” when it meets the requirements of government or other authorizing entities.

As an ACS-verified trauma center, Sanford Bismarck also becomes an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. Being a Surgical Quality Partner signifies a hospital’s dedication to consistently improving procedures and approaches, while maintaining a critical eye on process at every step. The Surgical Quality Partner designation lets patients know Sanford Bismarck is dedicated to quality and relentless self-improvement and has been verified or accredited by the ACS. Patients can trust that the care they receive at Surgical Quality Partner hospitals adheres to the most rigorous standards in surgical quality.

“ACS Quality programs are grounded in more than a century of experience and participation is an important measure of a hospital’s surgical quality. As an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, Sanford Bismarck has shown a commitment providing the best possible patient care, evaluating that care in a rigorous fashion and dedicating themselves to continuous self-improvement,” said ACS Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer Patricia L. Turner, M.D., MBA, FACS.

— Sanford Health’s chief transformation officer is joining leaders from Google and Augustana University for a one-day conference focused on preparing students for a world in which AI is increasingly ambient, but where human judgment, ethics and curiosity remain essential.

The Applied AI Summit: A Future-Ready Workforce at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, convenes students, faculty, industry, civic leaders and health care professionals for a focused exploration of how artificial intelligence is transforming education, business and health care.

In collaboration with Google Public Sector and regional partners, this immersive experience moves beyond theory to practical application, equipping participants with hands-on exposure to AI tools, cross-sector insight and actionable strategies for responsible adoption. The summit centers students in the workforce conversation while advancing institutional and industry collaboration to ensure graduates are technically fluent, ethically grounded and prepared to lead in an AI-augmented economy

Tommy Ibrahim, M.D., executive vice president and chief transformation officer, is a featured speaker in the session entitled, AI & The Future Workforce: A Cross-Sector Conversation. Joining Ibrahim is Bishop Constanze Hagmaier and David Golemboski, Ph.D., MTS, associate professor of government and international affairs. Joel A. Johnson, Ph.D., provost and executive vice president at Augustana University, will moderate the session.

“I am looking forward to engaging with students and faculty on how we prepare for a future where AI is increasingly embedded in how we work,” said Ibrahim. “At Sanford Health, we are focused on building AI literacy, engaging our workforce early and implementing strong governance to ensure these tools are safe, trusted and aligned with our mission. We’re also taking a disciplined, problem-first approach to innovation – focusing on where AI can have the greatest impact in care delivery and operations. Ultimately, what we do in health care will not change, but how we do our work must – and when done well, AI can reduce administrative burden, enhance decision-making and strengthen the human connection at the center of care.”

A board-certified hospitalist, Dr. Ibrahim received his doctor of medicine degree from St. Christopher’s IMD College of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, an academic affiliate of Johns Hopkins and is licensed in multiple states. He holds a master of business administration degree from Columbia University, a master of healthcare administration degree from Seton Hall University and is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a fellow in hospital medicine.
