Roger Maris All-Star Week offers free youth sports clinics

FARGO, N.D. – Roger Maris All-Star Week will feature multiple youth sports clinics for children ages 6 to 13.

The clinics are free to attend, but a $10 donation is encouraged at checkout. The clinics will be conducted by local, high school and collegiate coaches. Parents can sign their children up for the free clinics at RogerMarisWeek.com.

Each clinic will help build the confidence kids need to make the right decisions both on and off the field. Youth participating in sports helps teach sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership, while building self-confidence.

Prairie Lakes transitions to Sanford Health Watertown

WATERTOWN, S.D. — A new milestone in the integration of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System with Sanford Health will take place beginning next month with the transition to Sanford Health Watertown.

The transition of name and branding will occur in phases beginning in late June and is part of the “Together for Good” journey—bringing the two organizations together to strengthen the care they provide and expand opportunities for the patients and communities they serve.

“This change reflects more than a name update—it represents the next chapter of our shared future and the strength of what we are building together,” said John Allen, President and CEO of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System. “I also want to acknowledge what the Prairie Lakes name represents. It reflects decades of exceptional care, strong relationships and deep community pride. This legacy does not go away. It becomes part of the foundation we carry forward as Sanford Health Watertown.”

Safety Safari at Red River Zoo set for May 31

FARGO, N.D. – Sanford Children’s, Children’s Miracle Network, Safe Kids Fargo-Moorhead and AAA will host its annual Safety Safari from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at the Red River Zoo, 4255 23rd Ave. S, Fargo. The free event aims to help educate children and their parents about the importance of safety.

The event features animal presentations, a vehicle rollover simulator and activities and games focused on safety lessons. A limited number of bike helmets and life jackets will be available for purchase at this event and comes with a free fitting. Event goers will also meet local police, fire and ambulance personnel.

Sanford hosting sports physical event in Watford City

WATFORD CITY, N.D. – Sanford Health is offering sports physical events for student-athletes to complete their sports physicals for the 2026-27 school season. Student-athletes are required to get an annual sports physical when participating in school-sanctioned sports and must have their physicals completed before the first day of practice for their sport.

Student-athletes can receive their sports physical this summer on June 3 at the Sanford Watford City Clinic from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The cost for sports physicals is $35. Parental permission is required to receive a sports physical. Please bring your $35 payment (credit card only) and signed state sports physical form. Walk in without an appointment.

If unable to attend a sports physical event at Sanford Health, families may also request to schedule a well-child or sports physical appointment for their young athlete’s annual sports physical.

• A sports physical includes a physical exam with a provider to ensure safe participation and completion of the sports physical form.
• A child wellness exam is billed to your insurance and includes a comprehensive evaluation, immunizations, family history review and sports physical requirements.

Sanford hosting sports physical events in Bismarck & Mandan

BISMARCK, N.D. – Sanford Health is offering sports physical events for student-athletes to complete their sports physicals for the 2026-27 school season. Student-athletes are required to get an annual sports physical when participating in school-sanctioned sports and must have their physicals completed before the first day of practice for their sport.

BISMARCK, N.D. – An expert from the Sanford Bismarck region will host a Doc Talk next week on foot and ankle pain, heel pain and toe arthritis.

Kayla Emter, DPM, will discuss symptoms to look out for, when to seek care and what treatment options are available for foot and ankle pain. Study: 50% of deer ticks tested carry Lyme disease bacteria

MARSHFIELD, Wis. – More than half of deer ticks tested by Marshfield Clinic Research Institute from its citizen science tick study were found to carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

The Marshfield Clinic Research Institute launched the Tick Inventory via Citizen Science (TICS) in the spring of 2024 to investigate tick species ranges in the upper Midwest, as well as the pathogens carried by I. scapularis, also known as the deer tick or black-legged tick.

Deer ticks, which may only be the size of a poppy seed, are commonly found in Wisconsin in wooded areas and grasslands. They make contact as people brush past, latch onto their host and engorge in blood. The ticks can potentially carry pathogens that can lead to different diseases.

Reported Lyme disease cases have quadrupled over the past 20 years, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. The TICS study shows the vital importance for Wisconsin residents and visitors’ awareness of ticks and knowing the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease.

“Ticks may be small, but the illnesses they carry are not,” said Jennifer Meece, PhD, Marshfield Clinic Research Institute senior vice president of research. “Knowing the symptoms of tickborne illnesses can mean the difference between early treatment and long‑term health complications.”

Meece and Alexandra Linz, PhD., a staff scientist at Marshfield Clinic Research Institute, published a pre-print paper May 15 that outlines the TICS study’s early findings. A preprint is an early posting of a research article before peer review by independent scientists or accepted at a journal.

New tick species are becoming more prevalent or detected for the first time as climate conditions shift. In the upper Midwest, Lyme disease is the most common tickborne disease, by far. The deer tick, which carries Lyme disease, can also transmit the pathogens causing anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and several more tickborne diseases in this region.

“Having a clear understanding of tick species’ endemic ranges is critical,” Linz said. “Knowing where and how these ranges are changing, including each species’ local pathogen prevalences, will be crucial to a public health response to tickborne diseases.”

Background

In TICS first two years, citizens submitted 12,493 ticks. The most common tick species submitted was D. variabilis (American dog tick or wood tick), followed by I. scapularis. Combined, these two species comprised 99.7% of all submissions. Wood ticks are larger than deer ticks and, in our region, essentially never transmit infection to humans. Researchers received more wood ticks from citizen science submissions than from traditional tick collection methods, which suggests that people miss smaller ticks.

The paper outlines the results of species distributions from 2024 and 2025 of the TICS study along with the pathogen testing results from 707 non-engorged adult female deer ticks submitted in 2024. The positive rates were:

• 51% positive for Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease)
• 9% positive for Babesia microti (Babesiosis)
• 9% positive for Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Anaplasma)
• 3% positive for Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis (Ehrlichiosis)
• Multiple pathogens were identified in 14% of tested specimens, and significant associations were observed between burgdorferi and B. microti, and B. burgdorferi and E. muris eauclairensis.

The large sample size provided by the participation of citizen scientists allowed researchers to detect rare species of ticks not yet established in the upper Midwest. One example is the northward range expansion of A. americanum (lone star tick). Over two years, the Research Institute received 22 specimens that were identified as lone star tick, 16 of which were from Wisconsin. Lone star ticks have a sugar molecule in their saliva that can cause an immune response to red meat called alpha-gal syndrome or “red meat allergy.”

Another aspect that makes the TICS study unique compared to previous tick studies in the state is that it looks at all of Wisconsin instead of specific, limited sampling locations.

Researchers and clinicians offer caution on their results—the study doesn’t indicate that there is a 50% chance of acquiring Lyme disease from a deer tick bite. We know from other studies that the risk is about 3% (and that risk decreases to 0.3% for people who receive doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis). For a person to be at risk of developing Lyme disease, the deer tick must be attached for at least 36 hours.

“We don’t want to scare people off from being outdoors – Wisconsin residents and its visitors love the state because of the natural wonders and beauty,” Meece said. “We just encourage people to take proactive steps to protect themselves from ticks and be observant if they do find themselves with a tick bite.”

Impact on health care

Awareness and early recognition of symptoms are key to preventing serious disease. Wisconsin saw 6,469 cases of Lyme disease in 2024 – the highest on record – with an average of about 4,600 cases reported each year during 2019-2023, according to Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the U.S., with an estimated 476,000 people diagnosed and treated each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you find a tick attached to your skin, use tweezers to remove the tick as soon as possible. Grasp the tick close to the skin’s surface to avoid squeezing the tick’s body. Pull the tick away from the skin with steady pressure to avoid causing the tick mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin.

Symptoms of illnesses resulting from a tick bite can include rash, fever, joint pain, and fatigue within several days to weeks. Contact your medical provider if you have these symptoms. Lyme disease doesn’t always result in the classic bullseye rash. Bring the tick in a small plastic bag to your provider, if possible.

“Testing is important, because early treatment is highly effective in preventing later stages of the disease from developing,” said Dr. Thomas Boyce, a pediatric infectious disease physician with Marshfield Clinic. “If you remove a deer tick that is attached and engorged, a single dose of an antibiotic (doxycycline) can reduce the risk of contracting Lyme disease ten-fold.”

TICS study researchers say their efforts, and those by public health departments, highlight the need for increased awareness of tick bite prevention strategies in the public.

To reduce the risk of tick bites, spray the insecticide permethrin on clothing, sleeping bags, and tent fabric. Wear clothing that covers your skin. Finally, have someone help you check for ticks after time spent outdoors.

Once the tick, dead or alive, has been placed in the collection kit, just drop it in the mail to submit. Any tick found on people or pets is appreciated. Each kit will come with a unique identification number that people can use to look up, via an online dashboard, the species of ticks they submitted.

What’s next?

The TICS study, which had a humble original goal of 500 ticks, has already launched several other projects.

• TICS has expanded into Bemidji in northern Minnesota.
• Researchers are performing Microbiome analysis by sequencing 200 burgdorferi positive and 200 B. burgdorferi negative ticks to learn more about non-pathogenic microbes that may influence whether or not a tick carries a pathogen.
• They are partnering with Bayfield County Public Health and University of Minnesota to investigate Powassan virus.
• Researchers are working with University of Wisconsin to determine where and when most people are at risk of tickborne disease exposure as well as writing a methods paper about how to conduct citizen science.
• The Research Institute also engaged individuals who have experienced Lyme or another tick-infection to tell their story.

Sanford Bismarck was awarded the HeartCARE Center National Distinction of Excellence in April based on meeting accreditation criteria, and through their ongoing performance registry reporting.

Sanford Tracy receives level 4 trauma designation

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Minnesota Department of Health recently designated Sanford Tracy Medical Center as a level 4 trauma hospital. The hospital voluntarily participated in an intense designation process to become part of Minnesota’s statewide trauma system.

“This designation is a true testament to our team of providers, nurses and support staff who take care of patients at a critical time in their life,” said Stacy Barstad, administrator and CEO of Sanford Tracy. “This was a vigorous process for our team and their hard work and dedication demonstrates the passion our employees have to provide our community with exceptional and accessible health care.”

The process included an outside review of the hospital’s resources and capabilities to care for trauma patients. Sanford Tracy Medical Center met standards of commitment, clinical and equipment resources and staff training. The hospital also participates in a continuous performance improvement process.

For a severely injured person, the time between sustaining and injury and receiving definitive care is the most important predictor of survival. The chance of survival diminishes with time; however, a trauma system enhances the chance of survival regardless of proximity to an urban trauma hospital.

“The goal of the trauma system is to decrease injured patients’ time to care by making sure their medical needs are appropriately matched with hospital resources,” Minnesota Commissioner of Health, Dr. Brooke Cunningham, said. “With the designation of Sanford Tracy Medical Center as a level 4 level trauma hospital, we are getting closer to our goal of ensuring that seriously injured Minnesotans have access to an organized system of trauma care wherever they are in the state.”

On average, trauma claims the lives of 4,300 Minnesotans annually. States with trauma systems have seen survival rates increase by 15 to 20 percent. Wide-scale participation in the voluntary trauma system ensures that a  statewide, cooperative effort is in place to care for seriously injured patients.

Sixth annual Roger Maris All-Star Week returns June 15

FARGO, N.D. – The sixth annual Roger Maris All-Star Week returns June 15-19 at various locations throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area.

100% of funds raised during Roger Maris All-Star Week will stay local and help support Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center’s vision to expand into a national destination for cancer research, treatment, education and training. In October 2021, Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center launched the region’s first and only Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Sanford Fargo provides autologous transplants, meaning the patients donated their own cells for processing and transplant, allogeneic bone marrow transplants, where cells are taken from a healthy donor’s bone marrow for a transplant and CAR T therapy, where genetically modified T cells are infused.

“Roger Maris All-Star Week helps raise much needed funds to allow the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center Cancer to continue providing world-class health care close to home,” said Dr. Anu Gaba, Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center medical oncologist. “The gift of philanthropy has completely transformed the level of cancer care available in our community. The implementation of Sanford Health’s Blood and Bone Marrow Program and the future completion of the Peltier Lodge allows our patients to get care at home and the ability to avoid being multiple hours away from home, for months at a time.”

Roger Maris All-Star Week was created to support the work happening at the cancer center, honor loved ones, friends and neighbors affected by cancer, promote Roger’s passion for fitness and youth sports and celebrate the enduring legacy of hometown hero, Roger Maris.

Youth clinics this year include basketball, football, baseball and softball, golf, hockey, volleyball and pickleball. Each clinic is free to attend and will be conducted by local, high school and collegiate coaches. Parents can sign their children up for the free clinics at RogerMarisWeek.com.

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will play host to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Monday, June 15. Sanford Health is a proud sponsor of “Roger Maris Cancer Center Night”.

The Roger Maris Gala takes place on Wednesday, June 17, from 6-10 p.m. at The 44 Venue, 15 Main Ave., Colfax, N.D. The Gala is a night to celebrate the tradition of philanthropy at Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. Event goers will hear local stories of hope and healing, as well as hear an update on exclusive plans for the next era of cancer care for patients in the Upper Midwest and their families who need care close to home. The second annual Edith Sanford 9-Hole Golf Tournament presented by Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops tees off at 8 a.m. at Rose Creek Golf Course. This pink-themed event will help support innovative breast cancer research and patient care. The Edith Sanford 9-hole tournament will feature specialty coffee, a photo station, contests, swag bags and appearances by celebrities. Both men and women are encouraged to wear pink.

The Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament presented by Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops returns for a 42nd season, teeing off at 12 p.m. at Rose Creek Golf Course. The tournament began as a way to raise money for local charities. Now four decades later, the tournament has now transformed into a weeklong event supporting the needs of the community.

Celebrity athletes will once again make an appearance at numerous events throughout the week. This year’s lists of headlining athletes includes:

• Scott Hamilton, 1984 Olympic Gold Medal winner in men’s figure skating
• Chad Greenway, former Minnesota Vikings linebacker and two-time National Football League Pro Bowl selection
• Chris Klieman, Former North Dakota State University and Kansas State University head football coach
• Gene Taylor, former North Dakota State University and current Kansas State University director of athletics

The Sanford Health Foundation is teaming up with The Mighty 790 KFGO to host the Roger Maris All-Star Week Radiothon. The radiothon is an event to raise awareness and monetary donations to support special services, patient amenities, funding for direct patient assistance and research at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. KFGO will be broadcasting live from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, inside CJ’s Tavern at Rose Creek Golf Course during the Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament.

The Roger Maris Academy is designed to be a year-long program to help youth in our community explore various pathways to a great career. Thirty local middle school students will participate in combined educational and mentorship opportunities designed to help them discover their future careers. The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Red River Valley, in partnership with Sanford Health and the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber, has developed an exciting curriculum for the program. The Maris Academy meets Friday, June 19, at Kingpinz.

In 1961, Roger Maris hit a Major League Baseball single-season record 61 home runs. Although Maris lost his battle to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma at the age of 51, his legacy lives on through Roger Maris All-Star Week and the lifesaving care provided at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. Since opening its doors in 1990, the comprehensive cancer center has and continues to bring hope to those in and around the region.
