Sanford recognized with ACC Chest Pain Center Accreditation

Sanford Bismarck provides necessary care, resources to patients with heart attack symptoms

BISMARCK, N.D. — The American College of Cardiology has recognized Sanford Bismarck for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain. Sanford was awarded Chest Pain Center Accreditation based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 730,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. The most common symptom of a heart attack for both men and women is chest pain or discomfort. However, women are more likely to have atypical symptoms. Other heart attack symptoms include, but are not limited to, tingling or discomfort in one or both arms, back, shoulder, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, cold sweat, unusual tiredness, heartburn-like feeling, nausea or vomiting, sudden dizziness and fainting.

Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms. They have streamlined their systems from admission to evaluation to diagnosis and treatment all the way through to appropriate post-discharge care and recommendations and assistance in patient lifestyle changes.

Hospitals receiving Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the ACC must take part in a multi-faceted clinical process that involves: completing a gap analysis; examining variances of care, developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing of guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the care of patients experiencing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education and improved patient outcomes.

Sanford Bismarck is one of only 259 hospitals in the country to receive a 5‑star overall rating

BISMARCK, N.D. — Sanford Bismarck Medical Center was recently recognized as a 5-star facility on the inaugural Forbes Top Hospitals 2026 list.

The Forbes Top Hospitals rating system gives insight into the nation’s general acute care hospitals, providing clear, comparable information about where to find exceptional care across the United States. Out of approximately 5,400 eligible hospitals nationwide, only 259 received a 5-star rating, placing Sanford Bismarck among the top-performing hospitals in the country. Sanford Bismarck and Sanford Fargo are the only hospitals in North Dakota to receive 5-star overall ratings.

The Forbes Top Hospitals rating system evaluates clinical patient outcomes, hospital best practices, value-based metrics and patient experience data. Results were statistically adjusted for socioeconomic factors and access to medical services which helps ensure a fair comparison between hospitals serving different communities.

Sanford Fargo announces executive leadership team changes

FARGO, N.D. – Sanford Health Fargo is announcing changes to its executive leadership team.

Doug Griffin, MD, is retiring in May. Dr. Griffin currently serves as the chief physician at Sanford Fargo. Dr. Griffin practiced family medicine for 30 years, including 17 at Sanford Alexandria, before assuming regional leadership roles as chief medical officer in 2016 and chief physician in 2022.

“Whether it’s his dedication to our team, patients or communities, Dr. Griffin has wholeheartedly embodied the qualities of a servant leader, consistently putting others first and leading with humility, compassion and integrity. From his integral leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to strengthening our clinician workforce through record annual recruitment, Dr. Griffin’s achievements have left a lasting mark on our organization,” said Tiffany Lawrence, Sanford Fargo president and CEO.

Steven Briggs, MD, will transition into the chief physician role in February. Dr. Briggs is currently the chief medical officer at Sanford Fargo. He has been with Sanford Health since 2006, building a distinguished career as a trauma surgeon and in leadership, previously serving as medical director for trauma services in Fargo and Sanford AirMed in the Fargo and Bemidji regions before his promotion to chief medical officer in 2022.

“Throughout his career, Dr. Briggs has demonstrated a profound commitment to advancing care, improving outcomes and challenging the status quo to find better ways of doing things,” said Lawrence. “His leadership has strengthened both care delivery and patient experiences across our region, and I’m confident he will continue to make a meaningful impact as chief physician.”

Andy Burgard, MD, will be the next chief medical officer at Sanford Fargo. Dr. Burgard will begin his new role in March. Dr. Burgard began his career with Sanford Health as a respiratory therapist from 2004 to 2007 and returned in 2014, following medical school and residency, as a family medicine provider at the Sanford West Fargo Clinic. He’s held numerous leadership roles, including service chief for family medicine, chair of the Primary Care Enterprise Committee and membership on both the Sanford Fargo Region Physician Executive Council, where he currently serves as vice chair, and the Physician Leadership Council.

“I’m excited to welcome Dr. Burgard to the Sanford Fargo executive leadership team,” said Lawrence. “As a native of Jamestown, N.D., his strong local roots provide him with a deep understanding of rural health care and what matters most to the communities we serve. Sanford MRI Center re-opens after significant renovation

BISMARCK, N.D. — Sanford Health’s MRI Center in Bismarck has re-opened following a significant renovation designed to enhance patient care and comfort. The upgraded facility now features cutting-edge technology and a modernized environment, reaffirming Sanford’s commitment to delivering exceptional imaging services to the community.

Located at 720 E. Rosser Ave., the newly renovated center introduces two state-of-the-art MRI units:

• 3 Tesla MRI – The first of its kind in Bismarck, offering superior image detail, faster scan times, and enhanced efficiency
• 1.5 Tesla MRI – A trusted option for a wide range of diagnostic needs, often safer for patients with certain implants

“We’re committed to investing in cutting-edge technology to improve patient care and the patient experience,” said Bill Kopp, vice president of operations, Sanford Bismarck. “This renovation marks an exciting milestone for our community and reaffirms our dedication to providing the highest-quality imaging services.”

Both units provide sharper, clearer images with scan times up to 50 percent faster, while improving patient comfort through a feet-first option that helps reduce feelings of claustrophobia. The advanced design accommodates patients of all shapes and sizes, ensuring exams are more comfortable and versatile. For added safety, hands-free ferromagnetic detectors at the doorways identify iron-containing objects that could pose a risk near the magnets, while ignoring safe metals like aluminum—keeping both patients and staff protected.

To support these advancements, the center expanded from 5,062 square feet to 5,160 square feet, including a new vestibule for a more welcoming environment.

MARSHFIELD, Wisc. – Following the one-year anniversary of its transformative partnership, the Marshfield Clinic region of Sanford Health is officially unveiling the new look of the combined health system.

Marshfield Clinic joined Sanford Health in January 2025 in a new partnership bringing together nearly 55,000 employees and 58 medical centers further expanding access and care of the nation’s largest rural health care system.

To support the new brand, the Marshfield Clinic region of Sanford Health has launched a campaign entitled “Here for All. Here for Good,” celebrating its commitment to employees, communities, patients, and members. Communities will experience the campaign through a multi-channel media mix, including broadcast and cable television, digital ads, streaming radio, print and billboards featuring new brand standards that reflect its partnership with Sanford Health. The Marshfield Clinic name remains in place reflecting more than 100 years of providing health care in rural Wisconsin.

Milestones from first year of partnership

The first year of Marshfield Clinic’s partnership with Sanford Health has been transformative. While integrating more than 10,000 providers and employees and their work processes into Sanford Health, many notable goals were accomplished focusing on patient care. The Marshfield Medical Center-Park Falls renovation was completed in September with a grand opening attended by community leaders and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers. Marshfield Medical Center-Weston Women’s Health & Imaging Center opened in October as the first location in Wisconsin to offer contrast enhanced mammography.

“Our teams have elevated the quality and safety of care for our patients. MMC-Ladysmith awards $100,000 for community health projects

LADYSMITH, WISC. – Marshfield Medical Center-Ladysmith awarded $100,000 Friday split among 13 community organizations for projects that address health inequities in priority areas including alcohol and substance use, behavioral health and health equity.

The Marshfield Medical Center-Ladysmith Community Health Funding Program supports local not-for-profit organizations in Rusk, Chippewa, Taylor and Sawyer counties actively working to develop new ideas or enhance existing projects that improve the health of residents.

Marshfield Clinic Marquette Center now offering radiology

MARQUETTE, MICH. – Marshfield Clinic Marquette Center has taken another step forward in delivering timely and efficient patient care by now providing radiology services.

Whether a patient needs an x-ray for a possible broken bone or a chest x-ray to help diagnose a respiratory illness, the convenience of conducting x-rays at Marquette Center, 1414 W. Fair Ave. allows health care providers to more quickly diagnose and treat our patients. Previously patients had to travel elsewhere for an x-ray.

A ribbon cutting event held Tuesday at Marquette Center celebrated the service that debuted in October.

“Our images are read by highly qualified Marshfield Clinic radiologists and deliver results usually within the hour after the x-ray was taken,” said Dylan Taylor, administrative director for Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson. “We are pleased to offer radiology along with the other world-class care we provide.”

Marquette Center also offers specialists in primary care including med-peds, internal medicine and pediatrics, and offers neurology specialty care.

Sanford installs naloxone boxes at Bemidji, Bagley ERs

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Sanford Health is expanding access to life-saving overdose prevention tools with the installation of naloxone (Narcan) distribution boxes in the emergency departments in Bemidji and Bagley.

Naloxone is a safe, easy-to-use medication that reverses opioid overdoses by restoring breathing when opioids slow or stop respiration. The new distribution boxes allow anyone to access naloxone at any time by simply removing the doses they need with no prescription, training or questions asked.

This effort is supported by a Minnesota Department of Health Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) grant and reflects Sanford Health’s ongoing commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based care for substance use, including opioid use disorder.

Overdose risk is particularly high following hospital discharge or release from incarceration. Providing naloxone during these high-risk periods is one of the most effective ways to prevent overdose deaths and create opportunities for patients and the community to connect with additional care and support when they are ready.

Naloxone is non-addictive and safe for adults and children. It has no effect if opioids are not present in a person’s system, and multiple doses may be used if needed. Anyone can administer naloxone, and no medical training is required.

It is important to seek medical attention after an overdose reversal using Narcan. Narcan’s effects are temporary and medical attention is necessary to increase the likelihood of survival from an overdose.

In addition to overdose prevention, Sanford Health offers treatment for opioid use disorder, including medications such as buprenorphine, which reduce cravings and significantly lower the risk of future overdoses. The event is on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. inside the Fargo Parks Sports Center at the Sanford Sports Complex, 6100 38th St. S., Fargo. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

BISMARCK, N.D. — Mighty Missouri Coffee Co. is bringing its signature brews to Sanford Health in Bismarck. The new coffee shop is now open in the Sanford Bismarck Medical Center in the space formerly occupied by the Sanford Coffee Corner and Gift Shop, offering a fresh and inviting experience for patients, visitors and employees. “We are thrilled to partner with Mighty Missouri Coffee Co., creating a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy,” says Fred Fridley, chief operating officer, Sanford Bismarck. “This addition reflects our commitment to enhancing the overall experience within the Sanford Bismarck Medical Center.”

Guests can enjoy Mighty Missouri’s full drink menu along with a limited food selection, including liege waffles, bagels, toast and grab-and-go items. Customers can order ahead online for quick and easy pickup. In addition to coffee and food, floral arrangements will also be available for purchase.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –  Sanford USD Medical Center has been named to the Becker’s Healthcare list of “Great Hospitals in America.” The Sioux Falls medical center is the only hospital in the state of South Dakota to be named to the list.

Sanford shares the list of 100 great hospitals with health care systems of high caliber across the country, including Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Mayo Clinic.

Piper Hegland named 2026 North Dakota CMN Champion

FARGO, N.D. – 8-year-old Piper Hegland has been named the 2026 North Dakota Children’s Miracle Network Champion for Sanford Children’s Hospital.

Piper, an Oberon, N.D. native, is the daughter of Jake and Amanda Hegland. Since birth, Piper has received specialized care at Sanford Children’s Hospital. At 37 weeks, a routine ultrasound revealed that Piper had myelomeningocele, the most severe form of spina bifida. She was born with related complications, including bilateral club feet, where both feet are pointed in and down, hydrocephalus, which is a buildup of fluid in the brain and Chiari II malformation, a structural defect in which the lower part of the brain extends into the spinal canal.

“It’s an honor to walk alongside Piper and her family as they share their story this year. Piper’s journey is a powerful reminder that philanthropy is not just about giving – it’s about ensuring children and families across our region have access to the specialized care, hope and support they need at Sanford Children’s Hospital,” said Hillery Mork, Sanford Health Foundation lead development officer.

Sanford Orthopedic Hospital opens in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Sanford Orthopedic Hospital is now accepting patients. The brand-new, state-of-the-art building, located at 1508 W. 22^nd St. on Sanford Health’s main campus, will provide advanced technology and world-class care around the region.

“This is an historic day for all of us at Sanford Health,” said Andrew Munce, President and CEO of Sanford Sioux Falls. “It is not only a privilege, but a responsibility to be able to expand and enhance orthopedic care in our community. Our team of compassionate and talented providers will continue to put patients first and utilize everything this new building has to offer. It’s amazing to see this vision turn into reality.”

The 161,000 square foot hospital broke ground in June 2022. Constructed with more than 1,500 tons of steel beams and columns, the Sanford Orthopedic Hospital includes 35 rooms designed for both pre- and post-operative care, 12 operating rooms, and an intraoperative MRI – the first and only one located in the state of South Dakota.

“With real-time imaging during brain surgery, our neurosurgeons can operate with greater precision, reduce risk to healthy brain tissue, and have the potential to remove more of a tumor during a single surgery,” said Dr. Shawn Vuong, neurosurgeon with Sanford Health. “Our integrated OR & MRI suite represents a next-generation hybrid operating room, blending surgical innovation with advanced imaging to improve patient safety and outcomes.”

The Sanford Orthopedic Hospital will feature an expanded physical therapy space designed to help patients return home faster. The building will also be the new home of the Sanford orthopedic residency program, training the next generation of orthopedic care professionals.

Within the nine-story building is the brand-new Highpoint Hotel, featuring 56 rooms open to patients and their families, as well as the public. Perched at one of the city’s highest elevations featuring extraordinary views, the hotel is directly connected to both the Orthopedic and Children’s Hospitals and features complimentary parking, as well as an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and evening small plates.

“This facility is going to have an incredible impact,” said Dr. Kristofer Kimber, orthopedic surgeon with Sanford Health. “We now have more space for our patients before, during, and after their procedures. BISMARCK, N.D. —Keaton Joppru, M.D., a general surgeon, specializing in adult and pediatric surgeries, has joined Sanford Health in Bismarck.

Dr. Joppru received his medical degree at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. He completed his residency in general surgery at Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Dr. Joppru completed a single year clinical fellowship in pediatric surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
