Sioux Falls Marathon unites and embraces community

Sept. 8 event is a showpiece for the city and has something for everyone

Sioux Falls Marathon unites and embraces community

The Sioux Falls Marathon begins on Sunday, Sept. 8 inside the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center and ends at the same place with runners and their friends and family getting the opportunity to see the finishes on the big screen.

In between, the centerpiece 26.2-mile event will give participants a road’s-eye view of Sioux Falls. So will the half-marathon, 10K and 5K races, which also take place Sept. 8.

“Our route runs right through Falls Park and then through parts of downtown,” said Austin Bramley, project director for the Sioux Falls Sports Authority. “People who aren’t from Sioux Falls and aren’t familiar with the area get a chance to see the falls. And our downtown is pretty cool, too.”

Slight changes

There are a few minor changes for the events, which raised more than $22,000 for the Sanford Children’s Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network in 2018.

The route has been slightly altered this year because the Durham Park walking bridge that had been part of the course flooded out this spring. Runners will be covering the same terrain, however.

The runners’ expo and packet signup venue has also been moved. In the past it took place at the PREMIER Center and this year it’s at the Sanford Pentagon, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Sunday’s races begin with the marathon and half-marathon at 6:30 a.m. with the 10K starting at 7 a.m. In addition, the Miracle 5K will start outside, south of Madison Street and Western Avenue and finish inside the PREMIER Center.

Something for everyone

“It’s not just about the marathon and the half-marathon,” Bramley said. “For those who might not want to run a full or the half, there’s the 10K and 5K. It gets really gets everyone involved. You don’t have to be an intense runner to really be part of this weekend event.”

Runners can register at siouxfallsmarathon.com. The website includes pertinent volunteer and visitor information as well.

“The course runs on our trails and through residential areas in addition to Falls Park and downtown,” Bramley said. “People really get to see our whole community. It’s a day that promotes our community as a whole to get out and be active and it gives everyone else a chance to cheer and support them.”

Train with fun run & yoga

Once a month throughout the summer, participants pay $10 to receive a yoga class taught by the certified instructors from the Sanford Wellness Center and a choice between a Fernson Brewing Company tap beer (the official beer sponsor of the Sioux Falls Marathon) or a select Blue Rock Bar & Grill appetizer.

The last date for the Summer Fun Run and Yoga event is Monday, Aug. 12. Runners can meet at 6 p.m. for a short group run led by Sanford POWER Runner’s Clinic. The yoga class starts at 7 p.m. Both take place at Blue Rock Bar & Grill, 4021 Bobhalla Drive in Sioux Falls.

Sioux Falls Sports Authority staffers will also be on hand. Runners can sign up for the Sioux Falls Marathon/Half Marathon at a discounted rate.
