Medical Building 1 now open at Sanford USD Medical Center

Medical Building 1 (MB1), the newest five-story building on the Sanford USD Medical Center campus, is now open.

The building features 400 parking spaces, with the first four floors designated for patient and employee parking. The top floor of the new building houses the Sanford Center for Digestive Health, including the first-of-its-kind GI fellowship program in the Dakotas.

“We will be training future gastroenterologists right here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota,” said Jeffrey Murray, M.D., a gastroenterologist at Sanford Health who will oversee the fellowship curriculum. “This is a huge step in establishing Sanford Health as the destination for gastroenterology care as we become the premier rural health system in the country. If we can train future providers here, we have a possibility that they’ll stay in the area after their fellowship training, which will only benefit patients in the future.”

The Sanford Medical Education GI Fellowship Program is a three-year program that is accomplished after a medical resident finishes their Internal Medicine residency.

“This has been a vision of Dr. Murray’s for more than a decade,” said Paul Hanson, president and CEO of Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. “As many of us know, digestive health is extremely important and we want to do everything we’re able to do to attract new gastroenterologists in addition to retaining the talented team we already have. Thanks to a generous donation by T. Denny Sanford, the Fellowship Program will include a dedicated workspace for students as well as an endoscopic simulation space for trainees.”

In addition to the Fellowship Program, the 45,000 square foot Center for Digestive Health features 10 procedure rooms and 40 pre- and post-procedure rooms. The design of the new building includes all the clinic space adjacent to the procedure space within the top floor of MB1.

Construction on the 237,000-square-foot, five-story building began in early 2022 and has the ability to add three more levels on top for future growth.
