Sanford USD Medical Center has been named to the Becker’s Healthcare list of 100 Great Hospitals in America. The Sioux Falls medical center is the only hospital in the state of South Dakota to be named to the list.
Sanford Bismarck Medical Center and Sanford Medical Center Fargo in North Dakota also have been named to Becker’s 2026 Great Hospitals in America list, recognizing the nation’s leading hospitals for clinical excellence, patient outcomes, innovation and commitment to quality care.
Sanford shares the list with healthcare systems of high caliber across the country, including Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Mayo Clinic.
“This achievement is a combination of hard work, a passion to continue achieving top safety and quality measures and a dedicated team of caregivers who put patient care at the forefront of the work they do,” said Andy Munce, president and CEO of Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. “Patients trust us at some of the most difficult moments of their lives, and our team steps up and truly makes a difference for these patients and their families. We cannot do it alone; it is truly a team effort.”
Hospitals on the list are recognized based on clinical excellence, patient safety, innovation efforts, research, medical education and other qualities. Recently, U.S. News & World Report ranked Sanford USD Medical Center as the No. 1 hospital in South Dakota for the sixth consecutive year.
“This recognition reflects the extraordinary commitment of our physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and support staff who deliver exceptional care every day,” said Todd Schaffer, M.D., president and CEO, Sanford Bismarck. “Being named among the top hospitals in the country is a testament to our team’s dedication to quality, safety and improving the health of the patients and communities we serve.”
The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on analysis of rankings and awards from leading organizations, including U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and The Leapfrog Group.
“We are honored to be named one of the top hospitals in America. This recognition reflects the dedication of our exceptional leadership team, clinicians, nurses and support staff who help bring world-class health care close to home,” said Tiffany Lawrence, Sanford Fargo president and CEO. “We take great pride in being there when our patients need us most. By investing in the latest medical technologies and innovative treatments, we are strengthening our ability to deliver exceptional patient outcomes. Our patients’ health and safety are always our top priority.”
All three medical centers have earned Magnet designation, the highest national recognition for nursing excellence and quality patient care.
