Two women working for Sanford Health represent North and South Dakota on InStyle magazine’s 2020 “Badass 50” list: Chief Medical Officer Allison Suttle, M.D., and registered nurse Jessica Noeske.
The magazine virtually traveled all 50 states to recognize women health care workers responding to the coronavirus pandemic.
In South Dakota, Dr. Suttle appears on the list for helping to lead the region’s response to COVID-19. As chief medical officer of Sanford Health, she has been a voice of science on the virus, leading safety measures for hospitals, clinics and the public.

For North Dakota, the magazine recognized Noeske for her double heroics. First, she responded to the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas as a nursing student. Now she is choosing to work on the COVID-19 unit at Sanford Bismarck Medical Center — as a single woman, she hopes to spare her co-workers from putting their families at risk.

InStyle writer Shalayne Pulia explained their choices when releasing the list online July 9.
“We see photos of these workers with their faces obscured by PPE,” Pulia wrote. “But they are real people, often women, who have families and enjoy fashion and beauty as much as we do. We went state by state to celebrate them not only for what they’ve done but also for who they are.”
The story appears in the August issue, available on newsstands and digital download July 17.
