Changing table safety for you and your baby

Prevent falls and other dangers while dressing and diapering

Changing table safety for you and your baby

You have likely noticed that your baby is growing and changing every day. You may have also noticed you are spending plenty of time at the changing table these days.

Some parents like the handy changing table, while others turn to changing pads for use on the dresser, floor or bed. Whatever your preference, a clean, safe and comfortable place to change baby will make the process easier.

Changing tables certainly make dressing and diapering your baby easier. However, a fall from such a high surface can be serious for your little one.

Don’t trust your presence alone to prevent falls. Consider the following recommendations to keep your baby safe while using the changing table:

  • Look for a sturdy, stable changing table with a two-inch guardrail around all four sides.
  • The top of the changing table should be concave, so that the middle is slightly lower than the sides.
  • Buckle the safety strap on the changing table with each use.
  • Always keep one hand on your baby.
  • Never leave a child unattended on a changing table, even when using the safety strap.
  • A changing table with storage will help store everything you need.
    • This will prevent you from taking your eyes off your baby while hunting for supplies.
  • Have toys available to keep your older baby busy when changing their diaper.
  • Never let your child play with the baby powder container.
    • Accidentally inhaling the powder can be dangerous for your baby’s lungs.
  • If you use disposable diapers, store them out of your child’s reach.
    • Children can suffocate if they tear off pieces of the plastic liner and swallow them.

Stop using your changing table when your baby reaches the manufacturer age or weight limit. This is typically around the age of 2 and 30 pounds.

You will be changing lots of diapers in the coming years, so having a designated changing area will make diapering and dressing your little one quick and manageable. Remember to always stay next to your baby when they are on the changing table. Their safety depends on you.
