Patience (and forgiveness) key to running plan success

Patience (and forgiveness) key to running plan success

The truth is: marathon training is hard work. It takes time, energy and mental grit. However, with all this hard work, there will be rewards.

You will achieve many accomplishments throughout the journey. No one knows this more than Kendall Railing. He’s a certified strength and conditioning specialist at Sanford POWER and 15-time Fargo Marathon runner. So not only does he train and run full marathons, half-marathons and other races throughout the year, he creates training plans for athletes to run them as well.

Railing says runners and walkers actually need to train their minds as well as their bodies and to be patient. “Plan on sticking to the training plan, be patient and follow the plan. You will have more successes following the plan than pushing too hard.”

Consistency is another key factor when training for a marathon or half-marathon. “Don’t let one week of deviating from your schedule throw you for a loop. Pick up on the plan the next week, stick with it and be consistent. Good things are going to happen to you on race day,” Railing says.

Moreover, celebrate the training journey, the other runners you meet and the difference courses you run.

“While it’s about a healthy lifestyle, you should have fun and enjoy the experience, especially the process leading up to your big day,” he said.
