SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
— In a partnership between Sanford Imagenetics and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Pharmacogenomics testing for Veterans (PHASER) program has offered 100,000 PGx tests for veterans.  The testing is completed at Sanford Medical Genetics Laboratory in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The program helps clinicians understand how some commonly used over the counter and prescription medications interact with a patient’s genetic makeup. Approximately 90 percent of people have at least one gene change that may affect medication response. By using this information, it can help clinicians develop a treatment plan that may more closely fit a patient’s specific needs.

“Since this program launched in 2019, we’ve been able to help health care providers determine which medications and dosing works best for a particular patient’s care plan with the fewest side effects,” said Jessica Aguilar, vice president of Sanford Imagenetics. Our team at Sanford Imagenetics is proud to be part of this initiative and continue to better the lives of the patients we serve.”

Some of the medications PGx screens for include, Plavix® (clopidogrel), Lexapro® (escitalopram), Celexa® (citalopram), Advil® (ibuprofen), Paxil® (paroxetine), Zoloft® (sertraline), and Prilosec® (omeprazole).

Patients may consult with their primary care provider for a referral or can schedule an appointment directly by calling (605) 404-4000. The free PGx tests through PHASER are available to any patient with an eligible military status in their medical record (Active Duty, National Guard, Reserves, Retired or Veteran). The free test will be available through 2025.

Sanford Ambulance now administering whole blood

FARGO, N.D. – Paramedics with Sanford Ambulance are now able to administer whole blood at the scene of serious injuries or en route to the hospital, providing critical care when rapid treatment is vital to saving lives.

“By starting a transfusion within minutes of injury, we can stabilize severely bleeding patients long before they reach the emergency room,” said Dr. Jason Van Valkenburg, Sanford Ambulance medical director.

Unlike traditional components like plasma or packed red blood cells, whole blood contains red cells, plasma and platelets, making it more effective in treating traumatic hemorrhage. This protocol mirrors the best practices used in military combat zones and is now being adopted in civilian emergency medicine across the country.

“Our mission is to provide the highest level of care possible. This innovation puts lifesaving blood in the hands of our paramedics, and that will make a real difference in outcomes for our patients,” said Tim Meyer, Sanford Ambulance senior director.

Medics won’t have time at accident scenes to crossmatch patients with blood supplies, so all of the units will be O-positive, which is safe for patients of any blood type. A supervisor will carry the blood to emergencies in a climate-controlled cooler, along with equipment to warm it for transfusion.

Sanford Ambulance plans to work with Vitalant to host blood drives and encourages people to support the program by donating blood. Sanford Ambulance will work closely with area hospitals to return any unused blood units so they can be used before they expire.

Nationally, trauma is the leading cause of death for individuals ages 1 to 45-years-old. An estimated 40 million emergency room visits in the United States annually come from trauma-related injuries.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Minnesota Golden Gophers will play the University of San Francisco Dons in men’s basketball at the Sanford Pentagon in a nonconference matchup on Nov. 22. The on-sale date for tickets will be announced later.

“This matchup provides both teams the opportunity for a quality non-conference win at a true neutral site, which will be a valuable addition to their resume,” said Jesse Smith, vice president of operations for Sanford Sports. “We are excited for fans in the region to not only watch Minnesota play on Heritage Court but to also see such a storied program in San Francisco.”

Minnesota basketball ushers in a new era this coming season as Nico Medved takes over as head coach of the Gophers. Medved, who earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Minnesota, returns to his alma mater after a seven-year head coaching stint at Colorado State. It marks the second time Medved has been a coach at Minnesota, as he was an assistant coach during the 2006-07 season.

“We’re really excited to play in Sioux Falls and at the Sanford Pentagon this season,” Minnesota head coach Niko Medved said. “The venue and location give fans a great regional opportunity to watch the Gophers play, and we look forward to growing this partnership for future events there.”

San Francisco finished the 2024-25 season with a 25-10 record, including a 13-5 showing in the West Coast Conference. The Dons advanced to the second round of the NIT. San Francisco returns seven student-athletes from last year, including All-West Coast Conference (WCC) Freshman Team selection Tyrone Riley IV and the 2023-24 WCC Freshman of the Year Ryan Beasley. Entering his fourth year as head coach, Chris Gerlufsen guided the Dons to 20-plus wins in 2024-25, the eighth time in the last nine seasons the program has reached the 20-win mark.

“Our program is very excited for the chance to play Minnesota in the Sanford Pentagon this November,” said Gerlufsen. “We are always looking for quality games against Power 4 opponents, and this is a great opportunity at a historic neutral site.”

San Francisco leads the all-time series 1-0. Their last meeting was a 76-58 Dons victory at the Chase Center on Nov. 26, 2023.

This is the sixth NCAA Division I event at the Sanford Pentagon announced for the 2025-26 season. Iowa State plays Mississippi State in men’s basketball on Nov. 10. Nebraska will face Oklahoma in men’s basketball on Nov. 15. The Nebraska women’s basketball team will take on North Dakota State on Nov. 16. The South Dakota State women will face against Gonzaga on Nov. 20 and South Dakota State will match up against Wyoming in men’s basketball on Dec. 15.

FARGO, N.D.Sanford Medical Center Fargo has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2025. Sanford Fargo is one of only 323 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.

The award recognizes Sanford Health’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Sanford Fargo has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, Sanford Fargo has demonstrated sustained achievement in the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) and performed at the highest level for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

“We are honored to once again be recognized for our high standard of care for heart attack patients,” said Paul Burud, Sanford Fargo vice president of operations for heart & vascular services. “When it comes to treatment of heart attacks, every second counts. This honor is a true testament to our heart team, who go above and beyond to provide the communities we serve with high quality health care to close to home. Our multidisciplinary clinic helps diagnose, treat and educate our patients throughout and after their cardiovascular event.”

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over 800,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.
