Find care, comfort at renovated Sanford Family Birth Center

Sanford Health recently unveiled the newly renovated Sanford Family Birth Center in Bismarck, North Dakota, completing an expansion of the facility designed to make labor and delivery safer and more comfortable for moms and babies alike.

“The new rooms are wonderful,” said Megan Miller, M.D., an OB/GYN at Sanford Bismarck. “There’s a very calming environment, which I think is so important for moms. They’re nice and spacious so they can get up and move around.

“There’s room for family and support people. Most of them have a nice big bathroom with either a big shower or a whirlpool so that they can help during the labor process. I also think it’s nice because it gives adequate space for medical professionals to come in here and not feel crowded during the delivery process.”

Modern amenities for mom and baby

The idea behind the changes had the comfort and care of each new mom and newborn in mind, from the start of labor through postpartum. Renovations included a nursery, two c-section operating rooms, 17 postpartum rooms, and eight spacious, comfortable labor and delivery suites.

“That calming environment, I think, is so important,” said Dr. Miller. “Before it was kind of the old white walls of the hospital, so you feel much more like you’re walking into maybe like a spa setting where it’s much more calming. You can dim the lights in here. And so I think that has been great for more of that calming, non-hospital type feeling.”

Comfort for loved ones as well

Dads, extended family, support people and other loved ones can also count on a more welcoming and comfortable experience.

The lobby and family lounge have been updated, and new fathers or support people have a sleeper sofa in their birthing suite to get some rest as well.

“Family is a big thing. Being able to have your family come up and have a space to sit and get a little bite to eat has been great as well, especially when you have other kids because they want to come up and visit their new sibling,” said Dr. Miller. “The new space really is welcoming to everybody, from the patient and immediate family, to their extended family that’s coming up for that first visit.”
