Newsweek names Sanford medical centers among world’s best

Newsweek has named the Sanford USD Medical Center, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Sanford Medical Center – Bismarck, located in North Dakota, to its list of World’s Best Hospitals for 2025.

A first-time recipient of this award, Sanford Bismarck is the only hospital in North Dakota included on the list.

Sanford Health shares inclusion on the list’s top 100 hospitals with world-class health care organizations such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

According to Newsweek, the ranking is based on an extensive evaluation process, including an online survey of thousands of medical experts (doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals), patient experience data, hospital quality metrics and a PROMs Implementation Survey.

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.

“I am incredibly proud of every employee at the Sanford USD Medical Center for their part in achieving this recognition – each person plays a significant role in the health care experience of our patients and their families and visitors,” said Andy Munce, interim president and CEO of Sanford Sioux Falls. “This honor is validation of the expert care we provide and the satisfaction of the patients we have the privileging of caring for.”

The Sanford USD Medical Center is the only Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in South Dakota verified by the American College of Surgeons. It is the largest hospital in South Dakota as well as a teaching hospital for the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.

With 545 beds and 4,000 employees, the Sanford USD Medical Center’s comprehensive care includes emergency air transport, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, transplant services and specialty centers in children’s care, heart, cancer, neuroscience, sports medicine and women’s health.

The Sanford Bismarck region provides health care to central and western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northern South Dakota. It includes 26 clinics in Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, Dickinson, Williston and Watford City, as well as a Level II trauma center located in Bismarck.

“I am incredibly proud of our dedicated team of caregivers for this recognition,” said Todd Schaffer, M.D., president and CEO of Sanford Bismarck. “It is a testament of the exceptional care they provide each day. We remain committed to continuously providing innovative care, focused on improving health outcomes for the communities we serve.”
