The new Sanford Orthopedic Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was shaped around both the latest technological advances and what is best for patients.
The 161,000-square foot hospital broke ground in June 2022. Constructed with more than 1,500 tons of steel beams and columns, the Sanford Orthopedic Hospital includes 35 rooms designed for both pre- and post-operative care and 12 operating rooms.
The state-of-the-art building, located at 1530 W. 22nd St. on Sanford Health’s main campus, will provide advanced technology and world-class care around the region.
“It is not only a privilege, but a responsibility to be able to expand and enhance orthopedic care in our community,” said Andrew Munce, president and CEO of Sanford Sioux Falls. “Our team of compassionate and talented providers will continue to put patients first and utilize everything this new building has to offer. It’s amazing to see this vision turn into reality.”
Important advances
A highlight on the technology front is that surgeons will now have access to intraoperative MRI – the first and only such system located in the state of South Dakota. This level of magnetic resonance imaging can be a game-changer, say those who will be using it.
“With real-time imaging during brain surgery, our neurosurgeons can operate with greater precision, reduce risk to healthy brain tissue, and have the potential to remove more of a tumor during a single surgery,” said Shawn Vuong, M.D., neurosurgeon with Sanford Health. “Our integrated OR and MRI suite represents a next-generation hybrid operating room, blending surgical innovation with advanced imaging to improve patient safety and outcomes.”

The hospital features an expanded physical therapy space designed to help patients return home faster. The building will also be the new home of the Sanford orthopedic residency program, training the next generation of orthopedic care professionals.
On the top floors of the nine-story building is the Highpoint Hotel, featuring 56 rooms open to patients, their families, and the public. The hotel is directly connected to both the orthopedic and children’s hospitals and features free parking, as well as an on-site restaurant.
“This facility is going to have an incredible impact,” said Kristofer Kimber, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with Sanford Health. “We now have more space for our patients before, during and after their procedures. To be able to provide quality care at multiple levels is extremely rewarding and a reflection of the time, care, and commitment of everyone at Sanford Health.”
Life is better with more options
The hospital will be home to surgeons, specialists and therapists who will treat all ages. Patients seeking to improve mobility, relieve pain and return to daily activities will be able to find world-class care.

“The Sanford Health orthopedic building is going to have a huge impact, not just in our region, but nationally as well,” said Nathan Skelley, M.D., a Sanford orthopedic surgeon. “With this investment by Sanford Health, we have some of the most cutting edge, comprehensive technology that any academic group or orthopedic practice could ask for in medicine today. This building is really advancing the care that we as orthopedic surgeons are capable of delivering to our patients in Sioux Falls.”
With the help of the people delivering the care, patients will realize quickly that this is a new way to heal.
“With this building, we’re creating a state-of-the-art facility that has been designed from the ground up to improve the patient experience,” Dr. Skelley said. “From check-in to preparing for the operating room experience for patients and families to the unique addition of a hotel, Sanford Health has really tried to make a comprehensive experience for patients and their families with this new building project.”
