The American Academy of Pediatrics highly recommends exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby’s life. Recently, the organization has updated their guidance for breastfeeding continuation up to two years or longer.
In recent years, laws have been put in place to protect breastfeeding in public to support exclusive breastfeeding and longevity. Following are some tips to make your life as a breastfeeding parent convenient and easy while nursing in public.
Accessible clothing
- Wear a nursing bra or camisole (if you prefer to cover your abdomen)
- Nursing tops or dresses
- Button-down shirts
- Tops that easily lift up or to the side
Coverage options (if desired)
- Nursing cover
- Baby sling
- Infinity scarf
- Blanket
Helpful tip: If you choose one of these covers, make sure that your baby’s mouth and nose aren’t covered so that they can breathe.
Location
- Nursing or mother’s room
- Where you feel most comfortable
Helpful tip: You are legally protected to nurse your baby, unapologetically, wherever you would like.
Alternative solutions
- Bottling pumped milk
Helpful tip: Check the CDC Human Milk Storage Guidelines for safely storing and preparing breast milk.
Plan ahead, think about what may work best for you and your baby, and enjoy providing the best possible nutrition for your baby while you are away from home.
