Your baby is finally here! You quickly begin to realize that your newborn relies on you for absolutely everything. It’s important to recognize when you are stressed, need a break or need some help to juggle caring for your baby and caring for yourself.
Signs of stress
Everyone deals with stress differently. However, the signs of stress are very similar for most people. Here are some typical symptoms that indicate you may be stressed and may need to ask for help from family and friends:
- Easily frustrated
- Sleeping too much
- Sleeping too little
- Not eating
- Overeating
- Constant worrying
- Anxiety
- Moodiness
- Feeling overwhelmed
Ask for help
Asking others for help gives you time to de-stress.
It takes courage to ask for help; don’t be afraid to ask family or friends for help when you need it.
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness or an indication you are not a good parent. It’s actually a sign of taking care of yourself so you can better care for your baby’s needs as well.
5 quick ways to handle stress
Find a way to deal with your stress that works for you. Consider these de-stressing tips:
- Listen to music. Music can be a great stress-reliever for many people. Find something that works for you whether it’s soothing background music or playing your favorite song loud and dancing.
- Go on a date night. Many new parents need a little time together away from the baby. It’s OK and very healthy to go on a date night whether it’s a quick dinner, a fun movie or a relaxing massage.
- Exercise. Exercising can be one of the best ways to relieve stress. Do what works for you whether that is going for a jog, practicing yoga or just taking a walk.
- Breathe. Deep breathing is a great way to calm yourself down. Take 10 deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth to get some quick relaxation.
- Take a 20-minute power nap. Sometimes all you need is a brief nap to reboot your energy.
Remember, one of the most important things you can do for your baby is to take care of yourself. When you take care of yourself, you are likely to have more energy and patience to care for your baby’s daily needs.
