Faces of Fargo: Becky Moch and her first 5K

Becky Moch has stood at a lot of finish lines.

She has four kids and eight grandchildren, a husband and a lifelong love of sports and recreation. She grew up playing basketball, her kids run road races, and now she’s a regular walker and loves to bike with her husband.

“It’s nice to have time to visit and talk about how our day went and see what’s going on in the neighborhood,” says Moch, 57.

The same is true for her walking – she goes after work or sometimes with coworkers during the day, just to get outside for a while. Beyond that, she walks a ton for her job as the director of patient experience for Sanford Health in Fargo.

“I’m all over the place and go to all the different campuses,” she says. When she was giving multiple daily tours of the new Fargo Medical Center, she put on more than 15,000 steps a day – just at the office.

Now, she’s set her sights on completing the 5K portion of the Fargo Marathon weekend events in May. Here’s what she had to say about training, family and what inspires her.

On how it makes her feel: It gets you outside in the beautiful weather, and you can clear your mind and just get your focus back. It makes me feel so much better.

On what inspires her: My lifestyle is busy. I have a large family and love to spend time with my grandkids. You’re up and you’re down with them. I want to be there for a long time with them.

On long-term health: It’s important for us to try to keep ourselves healthy. And right now, I’m not. That’s why this marathon spurred me – maybe I’ll get out there and get some exercise and get walking. It gives me a goal.

On her training:  I want to get myself in shape. I have a treadmill … maybe even try to jog it a little bit, run a bit, walk a bit. That’s kind of my goal.

On inspiring others: I want to support this and be an example for others and show you don’t have to be a die-hard exerciser to do this. And I love that Sanford is sponsoring this. I want to be a part of it. If people see I can do the 5K, they can do it, too. You just have to have a little courage, and take that leap of faith and sign up.
