Cares for Kids Radiothon: Tune in and make a gift

At 15, Tyler Amundson of West Fargo has faced more challenges than some people do in a lifetime.

Born with Sotos syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects growth and development, he has relied on Sanford Children’s for treatment his entire life.

In addition to four major surgeries, Tyler has spent countless hours in doctor appointments and weekly physical, speech and occupational therapy sessions, making Sanford Children’s like a second home. It’s a place where he feels comfortable and special.

“He loves to socialize with the hospital staff and specialists and considers them his friends,” said his mom, Maria Peralta.

Powering through challenges

As the challenges of his condition surfaced over the years, Peralta said it was painful watching her son fall behind other kids his age.

“It’s hard watching your child struggle with simple things like reading or writing, and wondering about a future that is so uncertain,” Peralta said.

Though it’s not the life she expected for her son, she’s inspired by the way he has faced his challenges and proud of how hard he works to reach new goals.

“Tyler’s entire life has revolved around his condition,” Peralta said. “He’s never questioned it and always keeps a positive attitude.”

Tyler credits a special kind of inner strength.

“Every kid who has a medical condition like me also has great superpowers inside of them,” he said.

Every year, Tyler continues to grow stronger, more confident and better able to communicate. This life-changing progress wouldn’t be possible without his hard work and generous donors to Children’s Miracle Network at Sanford Children’s Fargo. Their support helps ensure Tyler has access to the care he needs, close to home.
