Sanford earns 3 of Top 100 Critical Access Hospital Awards

Sanford Vermillion Medical Center in South Dakota, Sanford Mayville Medical Center in North Dakota, and Sanford Thief River Falls Medical Center in Minnesota have been recognized as Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals by The Chartis Center for Rural Health.

Sanford Vermillion and Sanford Mayville have been recognized for the third consecutive year, while Sanford Thief River Falls has been recognized for the second consecutive year.

Chartis’ annual Top 100 award program recognizes outstanding performance among the nation’s rural hospitals based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance Index. The index measures hospitals based on factors including quality, patient experience and financial stability. Critical access hospitals are small hospitals in rural areas designated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“We have an exceptional health care team at Sanford Vermillion Medical Center,” said Veronica Schmidt, senior director of Sanford Vermillion. “To receive this national recognition for the third consecutive year is a testament to our team’s unwavering commitment to providing high quality care right here in Vermillion. This award reflects Sanford Health’s commitment and our local caregivers’ dedication to excellence in rural health care and the importance of keeping health care close to home for our patients’ convenience and comfort.”

‘Vital asset to rural communities’

“Securing the Top 100 Critical Access Hospital for the third consecutive year is a remarkable achievement that fills us with great pride,” said Jac McTaggart, Sanford Mayville senior director. “Each year, we strengthen our position as a beacon of excellent health care, solidifying our role as a vital asset to our rural communities. This consistent recognition highlights our ongoing commitment to deliver world class health care, and we remain committed to excellence for the well-being of those we are privileged to care for.”

“This achievement not only highlights our consistent dedication to quality health care, but also underscores the vital role we play in safeguarding the health and well-being of our rural communities,” said Brian Carlson, Sanford Thief River Falls executive director. “I am incredibly proud of our dedicated staff whose unwavering commitment to excellence continues to make our hospital a beacon of outstanding health care.”

Chartis says the top performing rural hospitals are “creating a blueprint for sustainability and value.”

“During an era of profound uncertainty for rural health care, the Top 100 rural hospitals continue to provide a unique lens through which we can identify innovation and inspiration for how to deliver high quality care to increasingly vulnerable populations,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader, The Chartis Center for Rural Health.

Now in its 14th year, the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance Index is the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. Featuring a methodology using publicly available data, the index is leveraged nationwide by rural hospitals, health systems, with rural affiliates, hospital associations and state offices of rural health to measure and monitor performance across a variety of areas impacting hospital operations and finance.
