Orthopedic surgeon receives teaching and research award

Nathan Skelley, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is the recipient of the 2023 Chester B. McVay Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research for his outstanding teaching and commitment to medical students at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.

Dr. Skelley, who is fellowship trained in sports medicine and treats a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, is the first Sanford Health surgeon to be presented with the award. He also serves as an associate professor at the University of South Dakota, where he is the medical director and team physician for the Coyotes athletic department.

The Chester B. McVay Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research is one of the highest honors given to any faculty member at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.

Dr. Skelley was presented the award at the Sanford School of Medicine Graduation Convocation at the beginning of May.

The award was established in 1987 in honor of Dr. Chester B. McVay, who served as a professor and former Chairman in the Department of Surgery of the Sanford School of Medicine.
