When you become a parent, your life changes in many ways. Some things you expected, and other things take you by surprise. To help keep parenting in perspective, consider these top five realities of parenting.
1. Your child will teach you about yourself
Throughout your parenting journey, your child will be a mirror to both your strengths and weaknesses. You will learn how much patience you have, how well you communicate and how much stress you can handle. Think of it as a way to keep moving forward and bettering yourself.
2. Flexibility is key
A nice dinner out? With your baby along, dinner might be interrupted with crying or needing to leave the restaurant.
A warm, relaxing bath? Until your toddler wakes up after going to bed and is now crying at the bathroom door.
With children come interruptions and unexpected events. Parents have to be flexible and go with the flow. Planning can help keep you organized or give you something to look forward to. However, be willing to change your plans when things don’t work out.
3. What you do matters
When you are with your child, they soak in and watch everything you do. Be aware that you are a role model for how your child will treat people, respond to frustrations, and solve conflicts with others.
4. Guidance and discipline can be challenging
Being consistent when your child is upset about the boundaries you are setting can be very difficult. It can feel as if you are damaging the bond you have or you may just want your child to quit crying. Stay strong – you are providing your child skills they will use throughout their life.
5. No parent is perfect
There is no such thing as a perfect parent. People aren’t perfect; parents aren’t perfect. There will be situations where you’ll wish you had made a different choice. Just remember to continually strive to do your best, admit and learn from your mistakes, and seek out help when you need it. Being perfect is a myth, but doing the best you can is possible.
Children continually teach parents to think about what really matters in life. Sit back and enjoy the life lessons your children can teach you.
