Sanford Health announces additional services in Aberdeen

Sanford Health announced today additional services and a new hospital for the people in the Aberdeen area. Acting in the best interest of their patients, the 18 providers with United Clinic in Aberdeen asked to join Sanford to become Sanford Clinic Aberdeen. Additionally, Sanford Health proudly announces plans to build a 36-bed, community hospital adjoining Sanford Clinic Aberdeen.

“We are extremely happy with our current relationship with Sanford Health, and this is a great opportunity to take that relationship to the next level,” stated Reid Holkesvik, MD with Sanford Clinic Aberdeen. “Joining with Sanford Clinic allows us to continue to provide great care locally while connecting us with the only truly integrated healthcare system in the region.”

Sanford Clinic Aberdeen

Sanford Clinic Aberdeen includes eight physicians and ten mid-level providers who serve Aberdeen as well as Ipswich, SD and Ellendale, ND. In addition to extensive primary care services, Sanford Clinic Aberdeen offers endoscopy, lab and imaging services. Sanford Clinic physicians from Sioux Falls also travel by plane twice a week to Aberdeen to provide a variety of adult and pediatric outreach services in the facility.

“All of this was made possible by the overwhelming case made by the providers of United Clinic that this was a once in a 100 year opportunity for their patients to start an undertaking that is intended for the next 100 years and beyond,” said Kelby K. Krabbenhoft, President and CEO of Sanford Health.

“We proudly welcome these outstanding providers to the Sanford family,” added Becky Nelson, Sanford Health Sr. Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and Aberdeen native. “Sanford Health and the providers with United Clinic share the same core values. We believe patients should receive quality healthcare as close to their home as possible, and this merger allows us to bring even more services and specialists to patients in the area.”

Sanford Regional Hospital Aberdeen

Sanford Health will also build a new 36-bed, community hospital in Aberdeen. The 105,000-square-foot hospital is expected to open mid-2011. Designed to best fit the community’s needs, the facility will include complete high-tech and high definition surgical services, labor and delivery, emergency department, heart catheterization lab, imaging, convenient outpatient and inpatient services and more. Several community leaders from the Aberdeen area will assist Sanford in the planning and development of Sanford Regional Hospital Aberdeen.

“Since beginning my practice in 1983, I’ve seen many changes in this community to improve healthcare. Integrating with Sanford Health and a new community hospital by far lead the list because of the additional services and increased healthcare access for people of this area. This is wonderful news for our neighbors and patients,” added Dr. Holkesvik.

Nearly two decades ago, pediatric sub-specialists from Sanford Children’s committed to patients in northeast South Dakota and began providing outreach services. Today, pediatric physicians in pulmonology, endocrinology, orthopedics, rehabilitation and cardiology see patients in Aberdeen. Beginning November 2008, pediatric surgeons will visit the community. Sanford Clinic adult outreach physicians in cardiology, pulmonology, vascular medicine and neurosurgery also see patients in Aberdeen.

“The Aberdeen community has always embraced us. Our outreach physicians are met with open arms when they visit Aberdeen, and we’ve been repeatedly asked to expand services. We’re responding with this merger and a new hospital,” added Nelson.

About Sanford Clinic Aberdeen
The clinic began in 1979 when Harvey Hart, MD began his practice in Aberdeen. His practice grew rapidly, and he was joined by Reid Holkesvik, MD in 1983 and Steve Redmond, MD in 1994. Pediatrician Julie Mayo, DO joined the group in 1995, making it the first multi-specialty group in Aberdeen. The practice was originally known as Family Health Center, later Family Care Center and finally as United Clinic to reflect its multi-specialty character. The clinic now offers a wide scope of primary care services including family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, hospitalized patient care, occupational medicine, nursing home patient care, endoscopy services and a wide array of laboratory and imaging services. In 2007, United Clinic moved to its new, 57,000-square-foot building, located at 3015 3rd Ave SE, and converted to electronic medical records. In November 2008, United Clinic will merge with Sanford Clinic to become Sanford Clinic Aberdeen. For more information, visit www.sanfordaberdeen.org.
