Sanford Aberdeen Earns Level IV Trauma Certification

(Aberdeen, SD) — Sanford Aberdeen has been awarded Level IV trauma certification from the American College of Surgeons and has been designated as a trauma hospital through the state of South Dakota’s trauma system.

In order to undergo evaluation for Level IV trauma certification, a facility must be operational for at least one year.

By fall 2013 Sanford Aberdeen had met the time requirement and was visited by the South Dakota Department of Health trauma site review team, consisting of South Dakota Office of Rural Health employees: Marty Link, Trauma Program Manager, Doug Schmitz, MD, FACS, Trauma Surgeon Reviewer and Kim Todd, RN, Trauma Coordinator Reviewer.

“The strong commitment of your facility and staff to provide quality trauma care to the acutely injured patient is evident and is to be commended,” commented Marty Link, trauma program manager for the South Dakota Office of Rural Health.

“As a new facility it is exciting to be awarded certification on the first evaluation. It is a testament to the skill and dedication of the expert team at Sanford Aberdeen,” said Sanford Aberdeen director of trauma and emergency department Kirby Kleffman.

Sanford Aberdeen is the only emergency department in the region where all of the emergency department physicians are emergency medicine residency trained and current in advanced trauma life support.

After being operational for another year, Sanford Aberdeen will be eligible to undergo evaluation for designation as a Level III trauma center.
