Boga Fit: Cardio on a floating mat

My first time trying Boga Fit

Boga Fit: Cardio on a floating mat

Do you ever get bored with the same old workout routine? If you are anything like me, then the answer is yes.

Sometimes I just need to switch up my routine.

Which is why I enjoy working out at the Sanford Wellness Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, so much. With all of the different classes, cardio machines and weight lifting equipment, I always have a way to keep my routine varied.

So when the wellness center announced it was adding Boga Fit into the mix, I immediately Googled it and was super ecstatic for what was to come.

I recently tried my first, but definitely not last, Boga Fit class. The instructor demonstrated how to get on and off the board and told us about a few more housekeeping items before we hopped on the FitMats, which are floating mats that are a bit smaller than a twin mattress.

You don’t need to know how to swim, but you may ask to be in the shallower end of the pool, which is a comfortable 70-ish degrees, so falling in the water wasn’t the worst thing.

But what will I wear?

Please tell me that you read that like the Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the Jim Carrey version)? Because that’s exactly how I sounded when I spoke to my fiance about what I would wear to this class. Thankfully, the staff at the wellness center helped me out. You can wear whatever you feel comfortable in:

  • Leggings
  • Shorts
  • Tops
  • Sports bras
  • Rash guard tops
  • Swim suits

Try to avoid cotton if you can.

The Boga Fit class

She walked us through several progressions for the class, which was great because I need all the help I can get when it comes to balance. Once the class felt confident on the FitMats, she took us through a series of exercises:

  • Burpees (where I thought I would fall into the water)
  • Planks
  • Squats
  • Chaos
  • Lunges (where I actually fell into the water)
  • Surfers
  • Russian twists
  • Rows
  • Russian twists
  • Rows
  • Bicep curls
  • And a set of tabatas

What I enjoyed most about the class was how unique the experience was. The board in the water truly engaged my core from start to finish (I’m totally convinced that I have abs of steel now) or, at least, it feel like I do.

Other Boga options

I had a ton of fun trying the Boga Fit class and highly recommend trying it out for yourself, below are four different class options, depending on your mood:

  • Boga Fit: This class features exercises you normally do on land but on the floating Boga mat instead! Expect a cardio, strength and core workout.
  • Boga Mix: This class will mix up cardio, strength and core exercises with yoga poses.
  • Boga Play: This water circuit class will feature several different water exercise “toys” to include our new Boga mats and aqua trampolines.
  • Boga Yoga: Flow through your yoga poses and find your zen on our floating Boga mats.
