Becker's Hospital Review honors hospitals for patient experience, safety and care

Two Sanford medical centers make 100 Great Hospitals list

Sanford USD Medical Center and Sanford Medical Center Fargo have been named to the Becker’s Hospital Review Great Hospitals in America list for 2025.

The Sioux Falls medical center is the only hospital in the state of South Dakota to be named to the list. Sanford Medical Center Fargo was the only health care system in North Dakota to make the list.

Sanford shares the list of 100 great hospitals with health care systems of high caliber across the country, including Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Mayo Clinic.

“This recognition is truly a team effort,” said Andy Munce, president and CEO of Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. “While we have had several architectural improvements at our medical center campus, the core of our success comes down to the providers, nurses, therapists and all our critically important front-line health care workers.”

Based on performance, patient safety

The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on analysis of ranking and award agencies, including U.S. News & World Report’s rankings, Healthgrades, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services star ratings and The Leapfrog Group safety grades.

These hospitals stand out for their exceptional clinic performance, unwavering focus on patient safety and dedication to innovation, research and education. Their commitment to delivering outstanding patient experiences has earned them national recognition.

“We are honored to be recognized as a top 100 hospital in America,” said Tiffany Lawrence, Sanford Fargo president and CEO. “This recognition affirms that the care and services we provide meet national standards of excellence and our ongoing commitment to expanding access to world-class care across the metro and rural communities we serve. I’m incredibly grateful for our exceptional leadership team, clinicians, nurses and support staff, whose dedication made this achievement possible.”

Sanford Fargo is the sole provider of several unique services and programs in North Dakota, including the only Level I Adult Trauma Center, Level II Pediatric Trauma Center and blood and bone marrow transplant program in the state. In addition, Sanford Fargo is also an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and recently achieved Magnet designation, the most prestigious credential a health care organization can achieve for nursing excellence and quality patient care. In 2024, Sanford Fargo received a 5-star rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
