Sanford Health sponsors Susan G Komen Race for the Cure

It began 25 years ago with one woman’s promise to her dying sister to end breast cancer. This fall, that promise will unite hundreds of people from the prairie.

Sanford Health announced today plans to partner with the South Dakota Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to sponsor the Komen South Dakota Race for the Cure®. The 5K run and fitness walk will be held on September 28 in Vermillion. One of the newest entries in the Komen Race for the Cure® series, the South Dakota race joins a global list of more than 100 races in the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer.

“Sanford Health recognizes the significance of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and all the organization has done and is doing for breast cancer awareness and research,” said Becky Nelson, Sr. Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Sanford Health. “This is the 25th anniversary of the race, and we are proud to be the presenting local sponsor and will do what we can to promote this empowering race throughout the region.”

Komen South Dakota Race for the Cure® will take participants through the streets of Vermillion before finishing inside the University of South Dakota’s Dakota Dome with awards and a tribute ceremony honoring race winners and breast cancer survivors.

“On behalf of the South Dakota Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, we can’t thank Sanford Health enough for their support,” said Race Chair Colette Abbott. “The race raises funds for breast cancer support, research, education and awareness. It also unites everyone touched by breast cancer. Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Sanford Health share the same vision – a world without breast cancer.”

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G.
