Sanford Regional Hospital Worthington (SRHW) announced today plans to improve and remodel its surgical services area. Through funding provided by Sanford Health, this new project will focus on providing the highest possible level of patient privacy, clinical quality and overall patient experience. While still in the design phase, SRHW expects to begin the design process on the $3 million surgery project this fall, with construction planned to begin in 2009.
“Patients and families have told us what we need to do to make our surgical services more user friendly,” said SRHW CEO Lynn W. Olson. “This includes improving privacy and having sufficient space to handle patients both before and after surgery. The surgery center improvement project will create a better patient and family surgical experience. I am pleased Sanford Health is supporting our need to upgrade this area to improve care for our patients.”
Sanford Regional Hospital Worthington performs nearly 2000 surgeries a year. Today, a majority of those surgical cases are done on an outpatient basis, but the present surgical area was designed and built when many surgical cases were inpatient. To create a space to meet the needs of modern surgeries and procedures, the surgery center improvement project will also improve patient flow, making the area more efficient for physicians and staff.
“Having surgery or a procedure can be a stressful event for a patient and their family, and these improvements will make them as comfortable as possible during the entire experience,” said John Lundblad, MD, a general surgeon with Sanford Clinic Worthington. “Sanford Health is pleased to support our hospital in Worthington in its effort to improve care for its surgical patients,” said Ed Weiland, President Sanford Health Network. “Already this year, surgical volume is up 24 percent more than anticipated which is a tribute to the surgeons and surgical staff.”
As part of the surgery center improvement project, new patient software will be installed to make scheduling patients easier and more convenient.
Worthington podiatrist Scott Hoffman, DPM added, “The scheduling improvements will increase access for physicians, providing benefits to all providers and surgeons who use Sanford Regional Hospital Worthington. Improving privacy will be a benefit for patients as well.”
A team of local physicians and hospital employees will work with project architects and Sanford Health to develop the new surgical area to meet both current and future needs.
