Sanford Health purchases Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital

Sanford Health announced today community approval of the sale of Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital (CIMH) to Sanford Health. Tuesday evening, members of the CIMH membership, which is made up of the Canton Chamber of Commerce and Inwood Horizons, voted to approve the sale to Sioux Falls-based Sanford Health. In a separate vote, the Canton City Commission approved an extended land lease of the CIMH site to Sanford Health. Both actions affirm full integration of CIMH with Sanford Health.

“This is fantastic news for our community,” said John Ripley, incoming CIMH Board Chair. “This enhanced partnership with Sanford will allow us to add additional services locally and offer even more care close to home – a guiding principle of Sanford Health. We are fortunate to have an organization like Sanford Health investing in us.”

The transaction includes a Sanford Health commitment to invest $4 million in improvements in the hospital and infrastructure.

“We consider ourselves fortunate for our relationship with the Canton-Inwood community and this facility, which dates back to 1991,” said Ed Weiland, President Sanford Health Network. “As the communities of Canton and Inwood grow closer in geography to the Sioux Falls area, having a strong, local medical facility is vital for the people of this area. Sanford Health is committed to providing our neighbors and friends in this community the best level of care, close to home.”

As part of the acquisition, all employees currently working at CIMH will be transferred to Sanford Health. The proceeds of the sale will be placed in a yet-to-be-named healthcare improvement fund. The fund will be managed by local community leaders who will decide how to best use the money to improve the health of the community.

“Full integration allows us to maintain quality healthcare in this community for generations to come,” said Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital CEO Eric Hilmoe. “This new, stronger partnership with Sanford Health increases our access to technology, equipment and capital, and I look forward to this promising future for our hospital and community.”

The sale will be effective December 31, 2008. Sanford Health plans a community-wide event in early 2009 to celebrate the new partnership.
