SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –- Veterans, guard/reserve or active-duty military service members are eligible for a $5,000 scholarship from Sanford Health created by its veterans and military services department.

The Sanford Health Military and Veteran Scholarship is accepting applications for the award, which will honor someone who possesses exceptional character and leadership in service, academics and community involvement.

Interested students should download and complete the application.

To be eligible, applicants must be a veteran, guard/reserve or active-duty military service member and a full-time student pursing a bachelor’s, graduate or professional degree from an accredited U.S.-based institution of higher education. They will be asked to provide an essay that demonstrates service, scholarship, humble leadership and impact.

The deadline to submit applications is Aug. 31.

The scholarship is a project of the Sanford Health Department of Veterans and Military Services, which was created as the health system aims to become the employer, provider and partner of choice for service men and women. Led by retired Navy Capt. Paul Weckman, the department is actively working on projects to enhance the veteran experience at its facilities — for both employees and patients.

The Sanford Veteran Information Hotline is (800) 949-1848 and provides veterans with a single point of contact for questions.
