Sanford Health CEO honored by Minnesota State Mankato

Kelby Krabbenhoft, CEO/president of Sanford Health, will receive the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato on Friday, April 24.

Krabbenhoft, of Sioux Falls, S.D., is one of 12 alumni who have been named 2009 award winners. He will be honored at an April 24 dinner and ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.

The Alumni Achievement Award goes to graduates who have achieved high rank or honor in their professions, and have made a major impact on their communities.

Krabbenhoft grew up in Mankato, the son of microbiology Prof. Emeritus Ken Krabbenhoft. He earned a degree in business and hospital administration from Concordia College, Moorhead, and returned to Mankato to complete an internship at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital and to earn an MBA in 1982.

He began his career at a small, rural hospital in Guttenburg, Iowa, then he moved to larger, more complex hospital systems in Illinois, North Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri.

In 1997 he was named president and chief executive officer of Sanford Health (formerly Sioux Valley Hospitals) in Sioux Falls. Since then the system has quintupled in size, to more than 10,000 employees, with coverage over 80,000 square miles in four states.

In 2007 Krabbenhoft facilitated the largest gift ever to a U.S. health system – $400 million to Sanford Health from Denny Sanford, chairman and CEO of United National Corp.
