Sanford to bring organ donation registration to MyChart

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Sanford Health patients are now able to register as organ, eye and tissue donors through MyChart – the portal that patients can already use to manage their health care. The update to MyChart simplifies the process of becoming a registered organ donor for interested patients.
“Sanford Health is proud to be one of the first health systems in the country to provide our patients with a simple option in MyChart that could result in someone’s life being saved,” said Roxana Lupu, Sanford Health medical information officer. “The choice to become an organ donor is a selfless decision and one that can impact countless lives.”
Epic and Donate Life America (DLA) have collaborated to offer patients this seamless way to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors directly through MyChart. When patients choose to register as donors through MyChart, they’re added to the National Donate Life Registry. Their donor registration status then travels with them if they relocate, just like their medical records in Epic, the electronic health record company that powers MyChart. Patients can choose to donate for transplant purposes, as well as for research and education purposes, and their decision to donate is not visible to their care teams, only to donation professionals. Basic patient information already included in MyChart will streamline the registration process.

More than 100,000 people in the United States are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Just one organ donor can save up to eight lives, restore sight to two people, and heal more than 75 others through tissue donation. While roughly 50-percent of U.S. adults are registered organ donors—typically after a trip to the DMV—surveys consistently show that 90-percent of Americans support organ donation.
