Sanford Orthopedic Hospital opens in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Sanford Orthopedic Hospital is now accepting patients. The brand-new, state-of-the-art building, located at 1508 W. 22nd St. on Sanford Health’s main campus, will provide advanced technology and world-class care around the region.
“This is an historic day for all of us at Sanford Health,” said Andrew Munce, President and CEO of Sanford Sioux Falls. “It is not only a privilege, but a responsibility to be able to expand and enhance orthopedic care in our community. The 161,000 square foot hospital broke ground in June 2022. Constructed with more than 1,500 tons of steel beams and columns, the Sanford Orthopedic Hospital includes 35 rooms designed for both pre- and post-operative care, 12 operating rooms, and an intraoperative MRI – the first and only one located in the state of South Dakota.
“With real-time imaging during brain surgery, our neurosurgeons can operate with greater precision, reduce risk to healthy brain tissue, and have the potential to remove more of a tumor during a single surgery,” said Dr. Shawn Vuong, neurosurgeon with Sanford Health. “Our integrated OR & MRI suite represents a next-generation hybrid operating room, blending surgical innovation with advanced imaging to improve patient safety and outcomes.”
The Sanford Orthopedic Hospital will feature an expanded physical therapy space designed to help patients return home faster. The building will also be the new home of the Sanford orthopedic residency program, training the next generation of orthopedic care professionals.
Within the nine-story building is the brand-new Highpoint Hotel, featuring 56 rooms open to patients and their families, as well as the public. Perched at one of the city’s highest elevations featuring extraordinary views, the hotel is directly connected to both the Orthopedic and Children’s Hospitals and features complimentary parking, as well as an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and evening small plates.
“This facility is going to have an incredible impact,” said Dr. Kristofer Kimber, orthopedic surgeon with Sanford Health. “We now have more space for our patients before, during, and after their procedures.
