Sanford Heart Hospital celebrates 10th anniversary

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –February is American Heart Month, and this year it also marks the 10th anniversary of the Sanford Health Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. The anniversary includes 50 years of award-winning heart care in Sioux Falls.
Located adjacent to the Sanford USD Medical Center, staff at the Heart Hospital have treated more than 196,000 patients and performed more than 205,000 surgeries and invasive procedures since the hospital opened its doors in 2012.
“At Sanford Heart Hospital, we put the latest technology in the hands of highly skilled cardiologists,” said Bridget O’Brien-Johnson, executive director of the Sanford Heart Hospital.
“Over the past decade, our team of dedicated heart care professionals have used that technology to lead the way in innovative procedures and award-winning heart care for patients in the greater Sioux Falls area.”
Since the start, employees at the Heart Hospital have taught medical students through the Heart Fellowship Program for Cardiovascular Disease. The Fellowship Program was followed by the creation of the Interventional Cardiology program in 2017.
“There’s a good chance if students train here, they’ll stay here,” said Dr. Tom Stys, Sanford Health interventional cardiologist. “We’re proud to be investing in the next generation of cardiologists.”
To date, the two programs have graduated 18 fellows, 100 percent of which are either practicing or participating in additional fellowships.
“Over the last ten years, the Sanford Heart Hospital has served as a beacon for heart care in the Sioux Falls community,” said Paul Hanson, president and CEO of Sanford USD Medical Center. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved thus far, and we look forward to celebrating more accomplishments in the years to come.”
Sanford Heart Hospital’s approach to expert heart care includes services in heart rehabilitation and support, heart treatments, vascular screenings and vascular treatments.
