As Sioux Empire grows, so does Sanford Health

SIOUX FALLS, S.D., March 3, 2020 — The city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is growing at a rapid pace.
Since 2015, over 20,000 people have moved to the city, according to the mayor’s office. Those moves have put the population just over 190,000.
As the city continues to grow, so does the need for access to health care.
With the announcement of several construction projects, Sanford Health is responding in a big way.
57th & Veterans Parkway construction
57th & Veterans Parkway, slated to be completed in 2021, will give those who live on the east side of Sioux Falls quicker access to cutting edge health care. The 42,000 square foot clinic will house family medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics, acute care, and include 3D mammography.
Given the increase of those who call eastern Sioux Falls home, there is a big need for the clinic.
“The time has come, and we’re ready to roll on that side of town. Those individuals on the east side, they’ve had to travel a long way across the city to access healthcare. That should change,” said Dr. Scott Boyens.
Surgery center construction
57th & Veterans isn’t the only new clinic coming to Sioux Falls.
A new orthopedic hospital is in the works, scheduled to be completed in 2023. The center will include 12 operating rooms, with space for more, as well as a Sanford Home Medical Equipment Center, and an Orthopedic walk-in clinic.
“There’ll be state of the art operating rooms.”
“They will be designed to handle just about any cases that me, or my partners would do, as a same day surgery kind of procedure. It will be geared towards patients coming in that day and going home later that day,” said Dr. Brian Aamlid.
Building expansions
By 2022, the Van Demark Building will look quite different. The clinic is set to undergo a 33,000 square foot expansion. The additional space will add 23 exam rooms, room for additional surgeons and other providers, as well as Radiology. Expansion to the Sanford Heart Hospital, meanwhile, has already begun. By the time it’s all said and done, the hospital will grow by over 26,000 square feet, including 16 new patient rooms.
“When the Van Demark Building was built some years ago, our assignment was to develop a really, really strong orthopedic department and to fill up this building. We did, and we’ve maxed it out,” said Dr. Aamlid.
“We have new partners coming who were very excited, who can be a great addition to our group, great additions to this community, great additions to this region. As far as the care and services that we offer, they will come with some skills and expertise and we don’t have in our group yet. So, we’re really, really looking forward to that.”
Construction of Harrisburg Clinic
The need for more access to healthcare isn’t contained to Sioux Falls alone. City officials in Harrisburg say they’ve had more than 1,500 people move to the area in the last five years.
Because of this, construction is soon beginning on the Harrisburg Clinic.
“We’ve watched these areas flourish with new developments in infrastructure and our organization is ready to support the health needs of patients in these communities and now into the future. When we build and develop a clinic, we want to the be the cornerstone within the community for expert health care,” said Paul Hanson, president and CEO of Sanford Health Sioux Falls.
Easier access across the board
Needing access to healthcare is an issue the community as a whole faces, especially given the growth.
Officials with Sanford Health saw this coming, and wanted to tackle the problem head-on.
“Access has been an issue. The population of Sioux Falls is growing. We’re starting to expand our service zone. You might say people are coming from bigger distances for medical care. I think medical care in Sioux Falls is at a high level but it can continue to get better and better, and better, ” said Dr. Aamlid.
Not only will the new and expanded facilities support our community, they will also help to continue bringing in the best of employees in the world of healthcare.
“Our clinics will offer job opportunities for providers, nurses, and patient access representatives along with numerous other roles for our current staff that call these communities our home. There’ll be able to have a shorter drive and be closer to their children’s school or daycare,” said Hanson.
