FARGO, N.D. – Sanford Health Fargo Dermatology, 4656 40th Ave. S., will host a free skin screening event for individuals who have not had a skin screening in the past two years on Monday, May 6, from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Appointments are required. Please call (701) 234-8860 to schedule your skin screening.
“Regular skin screenings are essential for early detection of potential skin concerns,” said Dr. Joanne Montgomery, Sanford Fargo Dermatology. “Melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, is caused by excess UV radiation from sunlight or tanning bed exposure and can appear suddenly or develop within existing moles. Early detection is critical for effective treatment, as melanoma is highly treatable in its initial stages.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Individuals with risk factors such as prolonged exposure to the sun or tanning beds, a family history of skin cancer or the presence of unusual moles or spots are strongly encouraged to undergo a skin screening.
Individuals can also conduct their own skin screenings at home by following the ABCDE acronym to monitor moles.
A is for asymmetry – one side of the mole doesn’t match the other
B is for border – irregular, jagged or scalloped borders
C is for color – more colors in one lesion, particularly more than three colors
D is for diameter – larger than 6mm or the size of a pencil eraser
E is evolving – new, changing or suddenly symptomatic with itching, pain or bleeding
It is possible to lower your risk of melanoma by carefully protecting your skin from UV radiation using a high SPF sunscreen, broad-brimmed hats and sun protective clothing. “Even one blistering sunburn during childhood will more than double your chance of developing melanoma later in life,” said Dr. Montgomery.
All sunscreens and Coolibar items in-store will be on sale for 20% off.
