LINCOLN, Neb. and SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Bryan Enterprises, a subsidiary of Bryan Health, and Sanford Health Plan, a provider-led health plan that is part of Sanford Health’s integrated system of care, are partnering to develop a new, innovative Medicare Advantage plan that will keep patients at the center, offer a more personalized experience and deliver better outcomes.

Together, the two organizations, which have a shared legacy of serving rural Midwest communities, will develop a Medicare Advantage product driven by input from a provider advisory council and designed to meet the unique needs and expectations of seniors in the greater Nebraska area. Bryan will help build out the provider network while Sanford Health Plan will provide core health plan operations through an administrative service agreement.

“We chose to partner with Sanford Health Plan because it is an established, provider-owned health plan that understands the unique needs and challenges of rural health care,” said Ben Sparks, President, Bryan Health Connect. “Our plan, based on feedback from providers and patients, will focus on empowering providers and addressing administrative barriers. We can deliver a better experience by giving providers a seat at the table and by working collaboratively to provide high-quality, high-value care in communities of all sizes.”

“We know from experience that Medicare Advantage plans offered through regional, nonprofit health systems can offer a truly differentiated experience for the members we serve,” said Tommy Ibrahim, MD, executive vice president and president and CEO of Sanford Health Plan. “We are excited to partner with Bryan to expand access to comprehensive, affordable and personalized health coverage for Medicare beneficiaries in rural Nebraska. Physician alignment is a shared north star that keeps both our organizations laser-focused on delivering better outcomes for the communities we have the privilege of serving.”

This nonprofit provider-led Medicare Advantage plan will be a win-win for patients and providers:

  • Bryan brings its strong reputation as a trusted Nebraska-owned and governed health care provider and experience managing a 30,000-member Accountable Care Organization.
  • Sanford Health Plan brings expertise in health plan operations, facility navigating complex Medicare Advantage and value-based care arrangements and a commitment to quality. It is among the highest-rated Medicare Advantage plans in the nation, earning a 4.5-star rating from CMS for the second consecutive year, a reflection of member satisfaction.
  • Sanford Health Plan’s Medicare Advantage denial rate is less than half of the national average, and for the few services that may require prior authorization, its turnaround time is less than 24 hours.
  • The new Medicare Advantage product will offer seniors in the Lincoln area additional benefits not available through original Medicare, such as dental, vision, hearing, fitness memberships, access to health navigators, support managing chronic conditions, and a high-touch experience.

The partnership will be set up through a joint venture and will be governed by a board with equal representation from both Bryan and Sanford Health Plan. Sanford Health Plan will provide core health plan operations through an administrative service agreement while Bryan will lead clinical services and help build out the provider network.

The Medicare Advantage product will initially be available in 20 counties surrounding the Lincoln, Nebraska, area for the plan year starting Jan. 1, 2026.

Sanford radiologist receives 510(k) clearance for catheter

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A catheter created by Bruce Gardner, M.D. radiologist at Sanford Health in Bismarck and produced by InnoCare Urologics, received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its EgressTM Foley catheter under the newly created FDA product classification code recognizing Foley catheters with safety features (SCT). This achievement marks the Company’s first FDA clearance of its platform technology and the first-ever device cleared under this new code.

The EgressTM catheter, patented by Sanford Health, avoids the injuries that occur when traditional indwelling catheters are pulled out while the catheter balloon is still inflated. InnoCare’s proprietary technology enables the EgressTM balloon to automatically deflate before a pull-out occurs, avoiding extensive patient harm.  The catheter is readily interchangeable with existing Foley catheters in clinical practice and patient use.

“A pulled-out catheter has typically led to significant bleeding, extended catheterization time, and reparation surgery, requiring diversion of resources and longer hospital stays for an already impacted patient population,” said Dr. Bruce Gardner, radiologist at Sanford Health and inventor of the catheter.  “The EgressTM catheter is a safer alternative, particularly among patients in the ICU and those with delirium or dementia who are at the highest risk of pulling out their catheters.”

Foley catheters are one of the most widely used medical devices, with over 30 million prescribed in the U.S. each year. InnoCare will be releasing the catheter to select hospitals and is exploring strategic commercial partnership opportunities in parallel.

“We saw a clear need to innovate a catheter design that has seen minimal advancement since its introduction over 75 years ago,” said Bryan Pinchuk, CEO of InnoCare Urologics. “The creation of this new classification code validates the need to reduce healthcare costs while providing a safer alternative to traditional Foley catheters. We are excited to bring a technology to market for millions of high-risk patients, and this milestone is a critical step in achieving that goal.”

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Becker’s Healthcare has named Jeremy Cauwels, M.D., chief medical officer at Sanford Health, to its list of 180 Chief Medical Officers to Know in 2025.

According to Becker’s, physician leaders like Cauwels play a pivotal role in advancing patient safety, maintaining high quality standards, bridging the gap between leadership and medical staff, and managing risk. As key drivers of continuous improvement, their efforts have earned numerous quality and safety accolades for their organizations.

“These recognitions are truly a reflection of the outstanding work done by the teams we have at Sanford Health,” said Cauwels. “My colleagues all share the same commitment to quality and safety, and when you have that unwavering dedication, it makes it easier to focus on the most important thing – putting the patient first.”

As chief medical officer for the nation’s largest rural health system, Cauwels represents physician interests to the executive leadership team and board of trustees. He also chairs the quality cabinet, leads enterprise aspects of the medical staff and oversees the system’s graduate medical education program.

Cauwels has been a champion for creating a culture of safety through a systemwide safety initiative, Sanford Accountability for Excellence. The program focuses on implementing solutions to challenges in four key areas: clinical quality, patient safety, employee engagement and physician wellbeing. Under Cauwels’ leadership, quality and safety scores have significantly improved across the organization. Since 2019, serious safety event rates have dropped by 80% at Sanford Bismarck (N.D.) and Sanford Bemidji (Minn.), while Sanford Sioux Falls  earned a 5-star CMS rating in 2023 and Sanford Fargo (N.D.) earned a 5-star CMS rating in 2024.

Cauwels has also played an instrumental role in overseeing an expansion of graduate medical education programs. In partnership with universities across our region, and thanks to a $300 million philanthropic gift, Sanford Health will fully fund 15 additional residency and fellowship programs for a total of 27 programs, which will train more than 350 residents and fellows a year by 2027. He has been a strong voice for Sanford Health’s $350 million virtual care initiative and is committed to bringing high-quality, convenient care closer to patients.

Becker’s Healthcare developed the list based on nominations and editorial research. Leaders do not pay and cannot pay for inclusion on this list.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
— Sanford Health President and CEO Bill Gassen has been recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare of 2024. This marks three consecutive years Gassen has been named to this significant list. Prominent leaders joining Gassen include: Wright Lassiter III, CEO of CommonSpirit Health, Mark Cuban, co-founder, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co., Rick Pollack, president and CEO, American Hospital Association, Trent Green, CEO, Amazon One Medical, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, Dr. Karen DeSalvo, chief health officer, Google and Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic, president and CEO, Cleveland Clinic.

The selection and ranking of the 100 Most Influential People was determined by the senior editors of Modern Healthcare. This year’s list honors the most influential figures in the industry in terms of leadership and impact who are shaping health care through policies, regulations, lobbying and business decisions.

“Our list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare reflects the important contributions of the men and women who have helped shape the industry in 2024,” said Mary Ellen Podmolik, editor-in-chief of Modern Healthcare. “They come from all corners of the industry and their leadership has been felt from the doctor’s office to Capitol Hill. We look forward to these honorees continuing to wield their influence to protect and improve patient care.”

Gassen, ranked No. 32 on the list, has led Sanford Health since 2020. The organization serves more than 1.4 million patients across the upper Midwest, operating 45 hospitals and more than 130 skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers. In October, Sanford and Wisconsin-based Marshfield Clinic Health System announced a definitive agreement to merge, a deal that would create a 56-hospital organization led by Gassen. Throughout his time as the head of Sanford, Gassen has focused on improving patient care outcomes, adding value through its 200,000-member health plan and fostering innovation. The system has also rolled out a $350 million initiative designed to improve care for rural and underserved communities.

Prior to being appointed president and CEO in 2020, Gassen previously held several leadership positions at Sanford Health, including chief administrative officer, corporate counsel and chief human resources officer.

“It is an honor to be included on this list with the many remarkable leaders who are in their positions for the right reasons – to make real change in the health care industry and improve the lives of patients,” said Gassen. “Our team at Sanford Health is actively transforming not only how rural America is able to access world-class care, but how that care is delivered to the communities we are privileged to serve.”

Gassen serves on the Executive Committee of the American Hospital Association Board, an influential role that allows him to advocate on behalf of Sanford Health’s people, patients and communities. He was also recently appointed Chair of the Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare and serves on the Board of Oscar Health.

YANKTON, S.D. — Sanford Research and the Mount Marty University biotechnology program have strengthened their partnership in training the next leaders in the biotechnology industry with a $100,000 donation from Sanford Research to the biotechnology program.

In response to supply chain and biosecurity vulnerabilities identified during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a nationwide push to restore U.S. pharmaceutical production capacity. Doing so requires leaders who have a broad understanding of the industry, from business and legal affairs to biomedical research and regulatory science. Sanford Research has partnered with Mount Marty University to help train these leaders.

The Master of Science in Biotechnology Management program started in August 2023. The degree is a 30-credit virtual curriculum taught by current industry professionals. To support the experiential learning elements of the program, Sanford provides students with hands-on biotechnology experience through internships and research opportunities.

“The real-world training provided by Sanford Research aligns perfectly with the program’s focus on passing first-hand experience and professional networks from current industry professionals to its next generation of leaders,” said Mark Brown, Ph.D., program executive director.

“We are very grateful for this partnership with Sanford and their dedication to our students and their success,” said Marc Long, Ph.D., president of Mount Marty University. “The need for biotechnology leaders in our region and nation is important, and we are excited to be able to provide education, experience and opportunities to these students.”

Now, in the program’s fourth cohort, Sanford has increased its support for these future leaders by providing $100,000 in scholarships to ensure that financial obstacles do not define who can aspire to join the ranks of the industry’s future trailblazers.

“We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Mount Marty’s biotechnology program,” said Jill Weimer, Ph.D. senior director for therapeutic development at Sanford Research. “This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering future leaders in biotechnology and ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of their passion and potential.”

Mount Marty’s program is committed to training future leaders for a wide range of industry opportunities. To achieve this, they recruit students whose disciplinary backgrounds range from business administration to science and engineering.

The next weekend No. 21 Nebraska defeated South Dakota in women’s basketball, followed by Saint Mary’s beating Nebraska in men’s basketball. BEMIDJI, MN — Sanford Health will be hosting heart and vascular screening events at the Sanford Bemidji Heart and Vascular Center in December at a cost of $35.

Heart and vascular screenings are recommended for people aged 35 and older, utilizing advanced tools and diagnostics to uncover critical details about an individual’s heart and vascular health. Screenings can include:

  • EKG
  • Non-fasting cholesterol
  • Blood pressure
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Framingham Score (risk estimate for developing heart disease in the next ten years)
  • Heart calcium score
  • Stroke/carotid artery ultrasound
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound
  • Ankle/brachial index

The heart calcium score may or may not be done depending on screening results. That cost is an additional $50.

“This is a great opportunity for the Bemidji community to have their hearts, veins, and arteries screened for signs of heart disease and vascular disease,” said Dr. Kevin Schoepel, a specialist in vascular surgery at Sanford Bemidji Heart and Vascular Center.

Appointments are available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Friday, December 6
  • Monday, December 9
  • Tuesday, December 10
  • Wednesday, December 11

Appointments can be scheduled by calling 218-333-5384. Registration is required.
