Sanford Health CFO to discuss future of health care

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Nick Olson, executive vice president and chief financial officer at Sanford Health, will join national health care leaders to discuss key issues affecting the health care industry at Modern Healthcare’s 2030 Playbook Conference April 2 in Nashville.

Olson will join a panel moderated by Caroline Hudson, finance reporter at Modern Healthcare, entitled, Reimbursement Realities: Navigating the Future of Healthcare Payments. Other panelists include Carrie Kincaid, senior vice president of government and consumer markets and market development at Priority Health and Citseko Staples Miller, managing director at FTI Consulting.

The panel discussion will explore how providers and payers are navigating an evolving landscape with changes to payment models. The panel will also share insights on strategies and opportunities to ensure sustainable growth and improved patient outcomes, including the role of AI in shaping the future of health care delivery.

Sanford Fargo to host Doc Talk about weight loss surgery

FARGO, N.D. – Sanford Health Fargo is hosting a Doc Talk discussion to educate the public about weight loss surgery and medications.

The event takes place on Tuesday, April 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Sanford Family Wellness Center, 2960 Seter Parkway, Fargo. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

Sugong Chen, M.D., Daaron McField, M.D. and Ellen Vogels, DO, will discuss the latest options for weight loss and how they compare to medication options. The panel will talk about the entire process from preparing for surgery and recovery to setting yourself up for long-term success.

The Sanford Fargo bariatric surgical team offers minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic procedures. These techniques can offer benefits such as shorter recovery times and reduced risks. Weight loss surgery also helps patients see a decrease or complete resolution of health-related issues, including acid reflux, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea.

Sanford Health joins Undiagnosed Diseases Network

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Sanford Health is now a member of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN), a research study backed by the National Institutes of Health which seeks to provide answers for patients and families affected by mysterious illnesses.

“Through this collaboration, patients will work with some of the best geneticists, researchers, genetic counselors and other providers in the region who will work diligently to find a diagnosis or treatment options for those with a rare disease or symptoms similar to that of a rare condition,” said Rachel Li, M.D., principal investigator and geneticist at Sanford Health.

Sanford joins other prestigious health care organizations to help patients living with undiagnosed conditions further explore their genetic profile and partner with other physicians and researchers to see if a diagnosis or treatment plan can be made.

Sanford will enroll at least five patients per year. As of October 2024, The UDN has evaluated more than 2,600 participants and provided more than 825 diagnoses.

Virtual reality headsets help improve pediatric patient care

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Sanford Health Foundation has announced a new donation to Sanford Bismarck that will create immersive and therapeutic experiences to children facing medical challenges. K&L Homes and the Moldenhauer family are donating virtual reality (VR) headsets to improve the experience for pediatric patients.

The VR headsets are being integrated into Sanford’s Child Life program, with a focus on pain management, anxiety reduction and mental stimulation. Pediatric patients will have access to these advanced technologies, which provide a range of virtual experiences from calming nature scenes to interactive simulation of MRI scans.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of K&L Homes and the Moldenhauer family and their commitment to improving the lives of our youngest patients,” said Sara Haugen, Sanford Health Foundation Vice President. “These VR headsets will offer pediatric patients an innovative tool to relax, escape and focus on healing, whether it’s through a calming meditation, an exciting virtual journey or therapeutic simulations. This addition to our patient care will make a meaningful difference in their overall recovery process.”

The VR sessions, designed by health care professionals, will not only serve as a distraction, but will also aid in reducing stress levels with blood draws, accessing ports and other procedures. They also offer an interactive MRI experience to determine if a child could navigate that experience without sedation. Child Life specialists at Sanford are trained to use the VR headsets and receive ongoing support.

“It is important for me as both a member of this community and as a father, to be able to help children during a difficult time in their life or when they are in need of care,” said Chad Moldenhauer, donor. “We are proud to be part of this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on both patients and health care professionals.”

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Sanford Valley City welcomes two new providers who offer specialized services, enhancing patient care for surrounding communities.

Andrew Herting, MD, is an internal medicine physician specializing in primary care, hospital care and addiction medicine. He earned his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of North Dakota.

Heather M. Pautz, LMSW, MSW, is an integrated health counselor. She provides short-term counseling on-site and via telehealth for children, adolescents and adults. Her areas of focus include adjustment disorders, anxiety, depressive disorders, traumatic stress, grief and loss and relationship concerns. She is a graduate of the University of North Dakota.

Sanford Fargo Substance Use Disorder Clinic open house

FARGO, N.D. – The Sanford Fargo Substance Use Disorder Clinic is hosting an open house for the public to learn more about the services it offers.

The event takes place on Wednesday, March 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the auditorium located inside of the Sanford Broadway Clinic. Pizza will be provided for lunch.

The Sanford Fargo Substance Use Disorder Clinic launched in January and provides comprehensive support and treatment for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. The clinic was made possible through the North Dakota Opioid Settlement Fund Grant and provides the following services:

• Substance use evaluations
• Medication assisted treatment
• ASAM Level 1 (low intensity outpatient) programming
• Care coordination and peer support
• Individual and group counseling services

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – Sanford Thief River Falls Medical Center will host a series of childbirth classes for expecting mothers, and their support person, to help prepare for their baby’s arrival.

The upcoming series will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Community Conference Rooms 1 and 2 at Sanford Thief River Falls Medical Center, 3001 Sanford Pkwy, on the following dates:

• April 7, 14, 21, 28
• July 7, 14, 21, 28
• October 6, 13, 20, 27

The upcoming series covers topics including healthy living, the birth process and coping strategies for labor such as comfort techniques, pain relief options and postpartum healing. Classes will also include information on comprehensive newborn care, including infant CPR, breastfeeding and car seat safety. Participants will also have the opportunity to tour the nursery and birthing unit during each series.

Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls and Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center were honored in South Dakota, while Sanford Medical Center Fargo and Sanford Medical Center Bismarck were honored in North Dakota, along with Sanford Bemidji Medical Center in Minnesota.

Sanford Fargo named one of 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals

FARGO, N.D. – Sanford Health Fargo was named as one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals according to an independent quality analysis based on a balanced scorecard provided by Premier, Inc.

Quantitative analysis of publicly available data was conducted to identify the top cardiovascular hospitals in the United States. The primary purpose of Premier’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals program is to inspire hospital and health system leaders to pursue higher performance and deliver added value to patients and communities. Organizations do not apply to participate in the study, and award winners do not pay to market their honor.

“We are honored to be recognized as one of the top heart hospitals in the country,” said Tiffany Lawrence, Sanford Fargo president and CEO. “From physician clinic appointments and preventive heart screenings to aortic stenosis treatment (TAVR) and TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR), our heart team covers the full spectrum of heart care. Sanford Fargo was also the first hospital in North Dakota to offer a robotic-assisted heart valve replacement procedure. The Sanford Fargo cardiology team also provides outreach cardiology services to many of our rural communities. We are committed to addressing rural health care challenges and providing high-quality, affordable care to everyone in our region.”

Compared to peer hospitals, those in the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals operated at lower cost and had better outcomes, recording significantly higher inpatient survival rates, fewer patients with complications, lower readmission rates and up to nearly $7,000 less in total costs per patient
case.

Premier’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study is based on quantitative research that uses a balanced scorecard approach, based on publicly available data, to identify the top cardiovascular hospitals in the U.S. The program focuses on short-term, acute care, nonfederal U.S. hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients. It includes patients requiring medical management, as well as those who receive invasive or surgical procedures. Because multiple
measures are used, a hospital must provide all forms of cardiovascular care, including open heart surgery, to be included in the study. Each patient group is mutually exclusive by design.

Sanford Fargo offers Hospital at Home

FARGO, N.D. – Sanford Health Fargo is the first hospital in North Dakota to participate in the Hospital at Home program.

Hospital at Home gives patients the ability to transfer from the hospital to their home while continuing to receive care. Patients who are admitted to the emergency room or an inpatient unit and qualify for Hospital at Home can receive IVs, antibiotics, medications, treatments and ongoing care and observation from home until they are eligible for discharge.

The program includes two in-person caregiver visits a day from a nurse or community paramedic, as well as daily virtual visits with a provider using a TytoCare device. Transportation is provided if patients need diagnostic tests at the hospital.

“Hospital at Home has a chance to be a real game changer for our patients. We are dedicated to ensuring high-quality care is accessible to all patients, regardless of their location or health challenges,” said Susan Jarvis, Sanford Fargo chief operating officer. “Hospital at home provides many benefits, such as more comfort, better sleep and greater independence with clothing, food and environment. This program also leads to less hospital-acquired infections, shorter hospitalizations and lower readmission rates. Sanford Health is committed to addressing rural health care challenges and providing high-quality, affordable care to everyone in our communities.”

The admitting provider and care team will assess each patient for eligibility in the Hospital at Home program. To qualify, patients must:
• Live within 25 miles of Sanford Medical Center Fargo
• Be at least 18-years-old
• Complete initial assessments at the medical center
• Have a diagnosis and care plan that can be safely provided at home
• Be comfortable using a TytoCare device
• Be able to move safely within their home
• Be able to follow home care instructions

It is recommended that patients have a caregiver in the home when joining the program.

FARGO, N.D. – Sanford Health Fargo has been recognized as having one of the top neuro and spine programs in the country.

Sanford Fargo was named to the Becker’s Hospital Review’s “Top 100 Great Neuro and Spine Programs.” All programs were recognized for their exceptional patient outcomes, advanced surgical techniques and groundbreaking research. These programs include visionary leaders, top-tier specialists, robust research initiatives and pioneering clinical trials.

The Sanford Fargo Brain & Spine Center has been the first to introduce several innovative offerings to the region, including endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques to treat skull base tumors. Cutting-edge robotic technology has provided shorter hospital stays and recovery times following spine proceudures. The team remains at the forefront of treatment options by conducting cutting-edge research on stroke imaging and medication efficacy, participating in clinical trials for multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke and more.
