Sanford to bring organ donation registration to MyChart

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Sanford Health patients are now able to register as organ, eye and tissue donors through MyChart – the portal that patients can already use to manage their health care. The update to MyChart simplifies the process of becoming a registered organ donor for interested patients.

“Sanford Health is proud to be one of the first health systems in the country to provide our patients with a simple option in MyChart that could result in someone’s life being saved,” said Roxana Lupu, Sanford Health medical information officer. “The choice to become an organ donor is a selfless decision and one that can impact countless lives.”

Epic and Donate Life America (DLA) have collaborated to offer patients this seamless way to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors directly through MyChart. When patients choose to register as donors through MyChart, they’re added to the National Donate Life Registry. Their donor registration status then travels with them if they relocate, just like their medical records in Epic, the electronic health record company that powers MyChart. Patients can choose to donate for transplant purposes, as well as for research and education purposes, and their decision to donate is not visible to their care teams, only to donation professionals. Basic patient information already included in MyChart will streamline the registration process.

“LifeSource has the privilege of managing the organ donation process and fulfilling the decisions of generous organ donors across South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota,” said Kelly White, LifeSource Chief Executive Officer. “Families whose loved ones have documented their decision at the DMV, online – and now through MyChart – describe the gift it is to know what their loved one wanted. LifeSource is thrilled that this additional registration opportunity is now available to Sanford Health patients.”

“Donate Life America is excited to work with Sanford Health and Epic to make donor registration more accessible than ever,” said David Fleming, president and CEO of Donate Life America. “By integrating this opportunity into MyChart, we are reaching people where they already manage their health—creating a seamless, trusted pathway for lifesaving generosity. Across the country, we are empowering millions to make a difference and help save and heal lives.”

More than 100,000 people in the United States are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Just one organ donor can save up to eight lives, restore sight to two people, and heal more than 75 others through tissue donation. While roughly 50-percent of U.S. adults are registered organ donors—typically after a trip to the DMV—surveys consistently show that 90-percent of Americans support organ donation.

Nebraska to play Oklahoma in MBB at Sanford Pentagon

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball programs are returning to the Sanford Pentagon for a nonconference matchup on Nov. 15. The on-sale date for tickets will be announced later.

“We push to make the best possible matchups for teams when they come to the Pentagon. Two former conference rivals and two passionate fan bases getting back together makes for a tremendous game and dynamic atmosphere on Heritage Court,” said Jesse Smith, vice president of operations for Sanford Sports. “We want to thank Coach Fred Hoiberg and Coach Porter Moser for bringing their programs back to the Sanford Pentagon for this early season showdown.”

The Huskers are coming off a 21-14 season which saw them win the inaugural College Basketball Crown, a 16-team postseason tournament held in Las Vegas. Nebraska returns five letterwinners from last year’s team including returning starters Berke Büyüktuncel and Sam Hoiberg, along with Connor Essegian, who averaged 10.7 ppg off the bench last season. Nebraska also returns senior Rienk Mast, who earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2023-24 before missing last season with an injury.

Nebraska is 2-1 all-time at the Sanford Pentagon. The Huskers defeated Oklahoma State 79-56 on Dec. 16, 2018, defeated Oregon State 84-63 on Nov. 18, 2023, and lost to Saint Mary’s 77-74 on Nov. 17, 2024.

“This is the third straight year we have played in Sioux Falls, and Sanford Sports runs the event in a first-class manner,” said Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg. “Oklahoma will be a very good test for us early in the season. I have a lot of respect for Porter Moser and his program, and they are coming off a season where they won 20 games and reached the NCAA Tournament. For our fans, it’s a chance to face an old conference rival in one of the most unique venues in college basketball. We are excited to add this game to our non-conference schedule, and I know the Sanford Pentagon will be full of Husker fans.”

Oklahoma was selected as a No. 9 seed for the NCAA Men’s Tournament last season. The Sooners fell in the Round of 64 to 2-time defending champion Connecticut and finished with a 20-14 record. Oklahoma was part of the Southeastern Conference’s record 14 NCAA bids, and the team’s 20 wins was tied for the most in a season since the 2015-16 Final Four team. Oklahoma is 1-0 all-time at the Sanford Pentagon. The Sooners defeated Minnesota 71-62 on Nov. 9, 2019.

“We are looking forward to traveling to Sioux Falls and playing against an excellent Nebraska program. Coach Hoiberg is a high-level coach for whom I have a lot of respect,” said Moser. “I’ve heard fantastic things about the Sanford Pentagon, and our players and staff will be excited to experience the game atmosphere there. OU and Nebraska share a deep history that includes almost 200 all-time matchups, but this will be just our second meeting since 2011, which will make it extra fun.”

Oklahoma leads the all-time series, 105-83, dating back to 1921. The Huskers and Sooners were conference rivals for nearly a century until Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011-12. The only meeting since the Huskers joined the Big Ten was a 69-56 Sooner victory at the 2022 ESPN Events Invitational.

This is the third NCAA Division I event at the Sanford Pentagon announced for the 2025-26 season. Nebraska will face North Dakota State in women’s basketball on Nov. 16, and South Dakota State will match up against Wyoming on Dec. 15.

SDSU to play Wyoming in men’s basketball at Sanford Pentagon

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota State Jackrabbits men’s basketball team is returning to the Sanford Pentagon when they play the Wyoming Cowboys in a non-conference matchup on Dec. 15. The on-sale date for tickets will be announced later.

This matchup brings together two head coaches who have been on the sidelines of Heritage Court – but in different capacities than when they will face off in December. Coach Sundance Wicks was an assistant at Northern State from 2016-18 and Coach Bryan Petersen was an assistant at SDSU the previous six seasons before being promoted to head coach earlier this year.

“We’re excited to host this early season matchup between the new look Jackrabbits and a Wyoming program that is building a contender in the Mountain West Conference,” said Jesse Smith, vice president of operations for Sanford Sports. “This is a great chance to see two teams with a lot of talent who are looking to cap off their non-conference schedule with a quality win.”

Petersen leads a Jackrabbits team that is coming off a 20-12 season. SDSU returns nine players from its roster a season ago including starters Matthew Mors, Kalen Garry and Joe Sayler. South Dakota State is 11-9 all-time at the Sanford Pentagon. Last season the Jackrabbits defeated McNeese State 80-73 in the Field of 68 Opening Day Showcase.

“We’re thrilled to be able to have another opportunity to play in the Sanford Pentagon this season. Sanford always does an incredible job hosting us and the Pentagon is known across the country as a great venue for college basketball,” said Petersen. “We will be matched up against a quality opponent in Wyoming. Sundance Wicks and his staff are heading into their second year in a tough Mountain West Conference, so we know they will be a challenging opponent in our non-conference. We look forward to the test and to be able to compete in front of Jackrabbit Nation!”

Wyoming finished 12-20 last season, the first campaign under Wicks. The Cowboys welcome back two key contributors in Matija Belic and Abou Magassa along with a host of solid newcomers via high school and the transfer portal. The Pokes were a tough out in Wicks’ first season with the Cowboys taking NCAA Tournament teams down to the wire in five games.

“The Wicks family has a lot of relatives in eastern South Dakota. As you well know I went to Northern State and to bring some Cowboy and Wolves fans down to Sioux Falls will make for great memories,” said Wicks. “It will be a celebration of basketball, and we know the Jackrabbit fans will be out in full force. You can never go wrong going back and playing at the Pentagon. It is a great place to play and a premier spot in college basketball to play a neutral site game.”

Wyoming leads the all-time series 5-1. The teams last met at a multi-team event in El Paso on Dec. 20, 2023, with the Cowboys winning 78-65.

This is the second NCAA Division I event at the Sanford Pentagon announced for the 2025-26 season. Nebraska will play North Dakota State in women’s basketball on Nov. 16.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In collaboration with the Sanford Health Foundation, Marsh McLennan Agency is partnering with the Sanford Children’s Hospital on a $1 million, 10-year philanthropic commitment to address the growing need for pediatric behavioral health care in our region.

This commitment from Marsh McLennan Agency will help advance work to integrate behavioral health into inpatient pediatric care at Sanford Children’s Hospital, powering a vision to provide comprehensive, whole-person care that supports each child’s physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

“At Marsh McLennan Agency, we have deep roots in the communities we serve, so we’re committed to doing our part to ensure the places we call home are dynamic places to live, work and play. That means doing all we can through volunteerism, service and philanthropy to help make a difference,” said Steve Vlk, CEO, Marsh McLennan Agency.

“Investing in pediatric health is an investment in the overall strength and vitality of our region. Healthy children grow into healthy adults who contribute to more productive, engaged and resilient communities. This philanthropic partnership will make an impact for generations to come,” said Rochelle Sweetman, Director of Healthcare, Marsh McLennan Agency.

The partnership will allow Sanford Children’s Hospital to:

  • Expand the pediatric behavioral health team with additional full-time therapists and social workers.
  • Enhance internship and training programs to empower staff and build a long-term sustainable model for delivering critical whole-person care to local kids.
  • Introduce assessment and follow-up services, ensuring children receive appropriate diagnoses, treatment and long-term care plans.
  • Enhance facilities to create dedicated spaces where kids with behavioral health needs can find comfort, heal and learn skills.

In the past year at Sanford Children’s Hospital, more than 5,500 patient encounters involved a behavioral health diagnosis or concern related to issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance abuse, self-harm, suicidal ideations or attempts, trauma, disruptive behaviors and more.

“Across the Sioux Falls region, more and more kids are struggling with heartbreaking and complex behavioral health issues. By addressing the growing mental health needs of children, this partnership will create a safer, more supportive environment where our youngest patients can thrive,” said Erin Sanderson, vice president of Sanford Health Foundation, Sioux Falls. “This generous gift from Marsh McLennan Agency will help expand and enhance critical behavioral health services at the Castle of Care.”

Marsh McLennan Agency’s gift will also help provide the use of screening tools to assess the emotional health of every patient admitted to Sanford Children’s Hospital.

“Early screening for behavioral health concerns in children is a critical step in ensuring better long-term outcomes,” said Joe Segeleon, M.D., vice president, medical officer, Sanford Children’s. “With this gift, we can implement a program that includes comprehensive assessment initiatives and follow-up services specific to pediatric behavioral health, equipping children and families with the care and support they need to thrive.”

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Mental Health America (MHA) has awarded Sanford Health the 2025 Platinum Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health. This is the third year in a row Sanford Health has received recognition from Mental Health America and the first time achieving platinum status.

The Bell Seal is a workplace mental health certification that recognizes employers who strive to create mentally healthy workplaces for their employees. Sanford Health underwent a rigorous evaluation of its policies and practices in four areas: workplace culture, benefits, compliance and wellness programs. Only two in five employers meet the standards for Bell certification. Sanford Health is the only organization that is 2025 Bell Seal-certified in North Dakota and South Dakota.

“Sanford Health is proud that our commitment to workplace mental health continues to grow and adapt to meet the needs of our employees,” said Ashley Wenger-Slaba, senior vice president of employee experience, education and workforce relations at Sanford Health. “Our caregivers and staff are all different, which is why we offer a variety of tools and resources to best support them at work and at home. The enhancements we’ve made over the last year are based directly on employee feedback and we’re committed to continuously improving our offerings knowing that employee needs are always evolving.”

Sanford Health has led efforts to combat work-related stress and burnout through resiliency groups, training, a clinician assistance program, counseling, a physician wellness council and comprehensive mental health resources to help employees take care of themselves physically and emotionally while caring for patients and residents.

Sanford has also developed a program called BeHEARD: Behavioral Health Education and Response Development, which is an interactive virtual course designed to increase participants’ knowledge, skills, and confidence to support people with behavioral health concerns. This course is intended to support a culture where employees are comfortable reaching out to each other, patients, residents, visitors and family/friends when behavioral health concerns are noted. All supervisors and above are required to take the course to ensure they know how to best support the behavioral needs of their team.

This month, Sanford Health was recognized on Fortune’s Most Innovative Companies list for the third year in a row.

MHA is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health, well-being, and illness prevention for all. MHA has spent decades researching mental health in the workplace and introduced the Bell Seal for Workplace Mental Health in 2019 to recognize organizations that value and implement policies and practices that support employee mental health and well-being.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
— For the second year in a row, Sanford USD Medical Center has been awarded on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals 2025. The annual ranking recognizes the top maternity hospitals in the U.S., highlighting medical centers that excel in providing exceptional care throughout pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care.

“Being named an America’s Best Maternity Hospital for the second year in a row is a true testament to the care team we have guiding mothers during pregnancy and childbirth,” said Melanie Rusche, vice president of operations for women’s and children’s services at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. “Bringing life into the world is such a precious gift and we’re grateful for the women and couples we get to care for as they start and grow their families.”

The ranking is based on three pillars:

  1. Nationwide Online Survey: Healthcare professionals and hospital managers with knowledge about maternity processes e.g., neonatal and perinatal doctors, nurses, and midwives were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals in the U.S.
  2. Patient Experience Survey: Survey of the overall patient experience in the hospital.
  3. Hospital Quality Metrics: Indicators relevant to maternity care were considered.

High-quality maternity care, provided from pregnancy through birth and postpartum is key to the long-term health of newborns and women who give birth. Given that maternity care is a major component of health care, Newsweek and Statista, the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider have partnered for the fourth time to identify America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in 2025.

Sanford USD Medical Center delivered 3,431 babies in 2024 and also offers several parenting preparation, childbirth and pregnancy classes.

Sanford Medical Center Fargo delivered 2,886 babies in 2024 and also offers several parenting preparation, childbirth and pregnancy classes.

FARGO, N.D. – The fifth annual Roger Maris All-Star Week returns June 16-20 at various locations throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area.

100% of funds raised during Roger Maris All-Star Week will stay local and help support Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center’s vision to expand into a national destination for cancer research, treatment, education and training. In October 2021, Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center launched the region’s first and only Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Sanford Fargo provides autologous transplants, meaning the patients donated their own cells for processing and transplant, allogeneic bone marrow transplants, where cells are taken from a healthy donor’s bone marrow for a transplant and CAR T therapy, where genetically modified T cells are infused.

“Cancer doesn’t discriminate and is a stranger to no one. Unfortunately, almost everyone has had a friend, family member or loved one battle this awful disease,” said Dr. Anu Gaba, Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center medical oncologist. “Roger Maris All-Star Week has brought the gift of philanthropy that has helped transform Roger Maris Cancer Center into a top destination for cancer care. The implementation of the Sanford Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Program has saved our patients countless hours on the road and nights away from home, allowing them to get their care close to home.”

Roger Maris All-Star Week was created to support the work happening at the cancer center, honor loved ones, friends and neighbors affected by cancer, promote Roger’s passion for fitness and youth sports and celebrate the enduring legacy of hometown hero, Roger Maris.
The list of events during Roger Maris All-Star week includes:

• Youth baseball tournament and home run derby – June 14-16
• Youth sports clinics– June 16-20
• RedHawks game – June 17
• Roger Maris Gala – June 18
• Edith 9-Hole Golf Tournament – June 19
• Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament – June 19

The Roger Maris Invitational youth baseball tournament takes place June 13-15 from various sports complexes throughout the region. The invitational features the ’61 for 61’ Home Run Derby on Saturday, June 14, which is open to children ages 9-12, even if they are not playing in the tournament. All spectators and participants who attend the home run derby will be given a ticket for a chance to win a baseball autographed by New York Yankee outfielder Aaron Judge. The drawing will be at the conclusion of the home run derby and the winner must be present to win.

Youth clinics this year include basketball, football, baseball and softball, golf, hockey, volleyball and pickleball. Each clinic is free to attend and will be conducted by local, high school and collegiate coaches. Parents can sign their children up for the free clinics at RogerMarisWeek.com.

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will play host to the Sioux City Explorers on Tuesday, June 17. Sanford Health is a proud sponsor of “Cancer Awareness Night”.

The Roger Maris Gala takes place on Wednesday, June 18, from 6-10 p.m. at The Pines – White, 4487 165th Ave. SE., Davenport, N.D. The Gala is a night to celebrate the tradition of philanthropy at Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. Event goers will hear local stories of hope and healing, as well as hear an update on exclusive plans for the next era of cancer care for patients in the Upper Midwest and their families who need care close to home. Tickets and tables are available to be purchased at rogermarisgala.com. 100% of funds raised during the Roger Maris Gala will support the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center’s vision to become a national destination for cancer research, treatment, education and training.

The Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament presented by Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops returns for a 41st season. The tournament began as a way to raise money for local charities. Now four decades later, the tournament has now transformed into a weeklong event supporting the needs of the community.

New to Roger Maris All-Star Week this year is the Edith Sanford 9-Hole Golf Tournament presented by Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops. This tournament is a scramble format and takes place at 8 a.m. at Rose Creek Golf Course. This pink-themed event will help support innovative breast cancer research and patient care. The Edith Sanford 9-hole tournament will feature specialty coffee, a photo station, contests, swag bags and appearances by celebrities. Both men and women are encouraged to wear pink.

Celebrity athletes will once again make an appearance at numerous events throughout the week. This year’s lists of headlining athletes includes:

• Kevin O’Connell, Minnesota Vikings head coach and 2024 National Football League Coach of the Year
• Marney Gellner, Fan Duel Sports Network host and play-by-play announcer and KFAN radio personality
• Chad Greenway, former Minnesota Vikings linebacker and two-time National Football League Pro Bowl selection

“Our family is excited to get back to Fargo for another year of Roger Maris All-Star Week,” said Roger Maris Jr. “We’ve been able to introduce my dad to younger generations through the youth sports clinics and Roger Maris Academy, as well as connect with non-golfers through community events. I know my dad would be extremely proud of the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center and Roger Maris All-Star Week.”

In 1961, Roger Maris hit a Major League Baseball single-season record 61 home runs. Although Maris lost his battle to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma at the age of 51, his legacy lives on through Roger Maris All-Star Week and the lifesaving care provided at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. Since opening its doors in 1990, the comprehensive cancer center has and continues to bring hope to those in and around the region.

His responsibilities will include interviewing players, sharing his personal journey during the Women’s Day Luncheon and serving as a visible presence at key events. The highlight of his role will come on Friday, September 12, when he has the honor of hitting the tournament’s ceremonial opening tee shot to officially kick off the first round of play.
