MARSHFIELD, Wis. – More than half of deer ticks tested by Marshfield Clinic Research Institute from its citizen science tick study were found to carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

The Marshfield Clinic Research Institute launched the Tick Inventory via Citizen Science (TICS) in the spring of 2024 to investigate tick species ranges in the upper Midwest, as well as the pathogens carried by I. scapularis, also known as the deer tick or black-legged tick.

Deer ticks, which may only be the size of a poppy seed, are commonly found in Wisconsin in wooded areas and grasslands. They make contact as people brush past, latch onto their host and engorge in blood. The ticks can potentially carry pathogens that can lead to different diseases.

Reported Lyme disease cases have quadrupled over the past 20 years, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. The TICS study shows the vital importance for Wisconsin residents and visitors’ awareness of ticks and knowing the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease.

“Ticks may be small, but the illnesses they carry are not,” said Jennifer Meece, PhD, Marshfield Clinic Research Institute senior vice president of research. “Knowing the symptoms of tickborne illnesses can mean the difference between early treatment and long‑term health complications.”

Meece and Alexandra Linz, PhD., a staff scientist at Marshfield Clinic Research Institute, published a pre-print paper May 15 that outlines the TICS study’s early findings. A preprint is an early posting of a research article before peer review by independent scientists or accepted at a journal.

New tick species are becoming more prevalent or detected for the first time as climate conditions shift. In the upper Midwest, Lyme disease is the most common tickborne disease, by far. The deer tick, which carries Lyme disease, can also transmit the pathogens causing anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and several more tickborne diseases in this region.

“Having a clear understanding of tick species’ endemic ranges is critical,” Linz said. “Knowing where and how these ranges are changing, including each species’ local pathogen prevalences, will be crucial to a public health response to tickborne diseases.”

Background

In TICS first two years, citizens submitted 12,493 ticks. The most common tick species submitted was D. variabilis (American dog tick or wood tick), followed by I. scapularis. Combined, these two species comprised 99.7% of all submissions. Wood ticks are larger than deer ticks and, in our region, essentially never transmit infection to humans. Researchers received more wood ticks from citizen science submissions than from traditional tick collection methods, which suggests that people miss smaller ticks.

The paper outlines the results of species distributions from 2024 and 2025 of the TICS study along with the pathogen testing results from 707 non-engorged adult female deer ticks submitted in 2024. The positive rates were:

  • 51% positive for Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease)
  • 9% positive for Babesia microti (Babesiosis)
  • 9% positive for Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Anaplasma)
  • 3% positive for Ehrlichia muris eauclairensis (Ehrlichiosis)
  • Multiple pathogens were identified in 14% of tested specimens, and significant associations were observed between burgdorferi and B. microti, and B. burgdorferi and E. muris eauclairensis.

The large sample size provided by the participation of citizen scientists allowed researchers to detect rare species of ticks not yet established in the upper Midwest. One example is the northward range expansion of A. americanum (lone star tick). Over two years, the Research Institute received 22 specimens that were identified as lone star tick, 16 of which were from Wisconsin. Lone star ticks have a sugar molecule in their saliva that can cause an immune response to red meat called alpha-gal syndrome or “red meat allergy.”

Another aspect that makes the TICS study unique compared to previous tick studies in the state is that it looks at all of Wisconsin instead of specific, limited sampling locations.

Researchers and clinicians offer caution on their results—the study doesn’t indicate that there is a 50% chance of acquiring Lyme disease from a deer tick bite. We know from other studies that the risk is about 3% (and that risk decreases to 0.3% for people who receive doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis). For a person to be at risk of developing Lyme disease, the deer tick must be attached for at least 36 hours.

“We don’t want to scare people off from being outdoors – Wisconsin residents and its visitors love the state because of the natural wonders and beauty,” Meece said. “We just encourage people to take proactive steps to protect themselves from ticks and be observant if they do find themselves with a tick bite.”

Impact on health care

Awareness and early recognition of symptoms are key to preventing serious disease. Wisconsin saw 6,469 cases of Lyme disease in 2024 – the highest on record – with an average of about 4,600 cases reported each year during 2019-2023, according to Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the U.S., with an estimated 476,000 people diagnosed and treated each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you find a tick attached to your skin, use tweezers to remove the tick as soon as possible. Grasp the tick close to the skin’s surface to avoid squeezing the tick’s body. Pull the tick away from the skin with steady pressure to avoid causing the tick mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin.

Symptoms of illnesses resulting from a tick bite can include rash, fever, joint pain, and fatigue within several days to weeks. Contact your medical provider if you have these symptoms. Lyme disease doesn’t always result in the classic bullseye rash. Bring the tick in a small plastic bag to your provider, if possible.

“Testing is important, because early treatment is highly effective in preventing later stages of the disease from developing,” said Dr. Thomas Boyce, a pediatric infectious disease physician with Marshfield Clinic. “If you remove a deer tick that is attached and engorged, a single dose of an antibiotic (doxycycline) can reduce the risk of contracting Lyme disease ten-fold.”

TICS study researchers say their efforts, and those by public health departments, highlight the need for increased awareness of tick bite prevention strategies in the public.

To reduce the risk of tick bites, spray the insecticide permethrin on clothing, sleeping bags, and tent fabric. Wear clothing that covers your skin. Finally, have someone help you check for ticks after time spent outdoors.

Get your tick kit

For more information, or to request a pre-paid collection kit be sent to you, contact tics@marshfieldclinic.org or 1-715-389-7796 (extension 16462). Parks and nature centers interested in having kits available for their visitors also are encouraged to contact Marshfield Clinic Research Institute.

Once the tick, dead or alive, has been placed in the collection kit, just drop it in the mail to submit. Any tick found on people or pets is appreciated. Each kit will come with a unique identification number that people can use to look up, via an online dashboard, the species of ticks they submitted.

What’s next?

The TICS study, which had a humble original goal of 500 ticks, has already launched several other projects.

  • TICS has expanded into Bemidji in northern Minnesota.
  • Researchers are performing Microbiome analysis by sequencing 200 burgdorferi positive and 200 B. burgdorferi negative ticks to learn more about non-pathogenic microbes that may influence whether or not a tick carries a pathogen.
  • They are partnering with Bayfield County Public Health and University of Minnesota to investigate Powassan virus.
  • Researchers are working with University of Wisconsin to determine where and when most people are at risk of tickborne disease exposure as well as writing a methods paper about how to conduct citizen science.
  • The Research Institute also engaged individuals who have experienced Lyme or another tick-infection to tell their story.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Sanford Health leaders will join healthcare executives, policymakers and technology innovators from across the country at Reuters Digital Health Summit May 20 – 21 in Chicago, to discuss how health systems are responsibly scaling AI and digital innovation to improve patient care, workforce sustainability and operational performance.

Tommy Ibrahim, M.D., executive vice president and chief transformation officer at Sanford Health, will join a fireside chat, The Future We Choose: Defining the Next Chapter of Digital Health. Ibrahim will discuss how Sanford Health is redesigning care delivery by leveraging AI and digital innovation to advance more connected, data-driven and patient-centered care across rural America.

“Transformation is ultimately about rethinking how care is delivered — not simply implementing new technology,” Ibrahim said. “At Sanford Health, we’re taking a disciplined, problem-first approach to scaling AI in ways that expand access, support our workforce, improve affordability and drive better outcomes for the patients and communities we serve.”

David Newman, M.D., chief medical officer for virtual care at Sanford Health, will join an executive panel discussion entitled, The Digital Health Mandate – Leading with Urgency, Clarity and Accountability.  Newman will share how Sanford is harnessing AI tools and virtual care to strengthen the patient experience.

“Healthcare is at an inflection point, especially in rural America, where AI and virtual care are rapidly reshaping expectations around access, responsiveness and convenience,” Newman said. “We’re moving beyond the hype phase of digital health and into the real work of operationalizing these tools in ways that reduce friction for clinicians and improve the patient experience.”

Erica DeBoer, senior vice president, chief nursing officer at Sanford Health, will join a panel discussion, entitled Navigate Change Management via AI and Digital Solutions to Improve Organizational Adaptability. DeBoer will discuss Sanford Health’s virtual nursing journey and how the organization is partnering closely with frontline teams to co-design technology-enabled workflows that strengthen patient care, reduce administrative burden and create more sustainable nursing roles. DeBoer will also speak during a Women in Healthcare Community Networking Lunch during the conference.

“Trust is foundational to every part of digital transformation in healthcare,” DeBoer said. “Our virtual nursing model has been built in close partnership with our frontline teams. We are focused on leveraging the brilliance at the bedside to improve patient safety, reduce administrative burden and create new opportunities for nurses to rethink how care is delivered while continuing to contribute in meaningful ways.”

Sanford Tracy receives level 4 trauma designation

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Minnesota Department of Health recently designated Sanford Tracy Medical Center as a level 4 trauma hospital. The hospital voluntarily participated in an intense designation process to become part of Minnesota’s statewide trauma system.

“This designation is a true testament to our team of providers, nurses and support staff who take care of patients at a critical time in their life,” said Stacy Barstad, administrator and CEO of Sanford Tracy. “This was a vigorous process for our team and their hard work and dedication demonstrates the passion our employees have to provide our community with exceptional and accessible health care.”

The process included an outside review of the hospital’s resources and capabilities to care for trauma patients. Sanford Tracy Medical Center met standards of commitment, clinical and equipment resources and staff training. The hospital also participates in a continuous performance improvement process.

For a severely injured person, the time between sustaining and injury and receiving definitive care is the most important predictor of survival. The chance of survival diminishes with time; however, a trauma system enhances the chance of survival regardless of proximity to an urban trauma hospital.

“The goal of the trauma system is to decrease injured patients’ time to care by making sure their medical needs are appropriately matched with hospital resources,” Minnesota Commissioner of Health, Dr. Brooke Cunningham, said. “With the designation of Sanford Tracy Medical Center as a level 4 level trauma hospital, we are getting closer to our goal of ensuring that seriously injured Minnesotans have access to an organized system of trauma care wherever they are in the state.”

On average, trauma claims the lives of 4,300 Minnesotans annually. States with trauma systems have seen survival rates increase by 15 to 20 percent. Wide-scale participation in the voluntary trauma system ensures that a  statewide, cooperative effort is in place to care for seriously injured patients.

FARGO, N.D. – The sixth annual Roger Maris All-Star Week returns June 15-19 at various locations throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area.

100% of funds raised during Roger Maris All-Star Week will stay local and help support Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center’s vision to expand into a national destination for cancer research, treatment, education and training. In October 2021, Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center launched the region’s first and only Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Program. Sanford Fargo provides autologous transplants, meaning the patients donated their own cells for processing and transplant, allogeneic bone marrow transplants, where cells are taken from a healthy donor’s bone marrow for a transplant and CAR T therapy, where genetically modified T cells are infused.

“Roger Maris All-Star Week helps raise much needed funds to allow the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center Cancer to continue providing world-class health care close to home,” said Dr. Anu Gaba, Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center medical oncologist. “The gift of philanthropy has completely transformed the level of cancer care available in our community. The implementation of Sanford Health’s Blood and Bone Marrow Program and the future completion of the Peltier Lodge allows our patients to get care at home and the ability to avoid being multiple hours away from home, for months at a time.”

Roger Maris All-Star Week was created to support the work happening at the cancer center, honor loved ones, friends and neighbors affected by cancer, promote Roger’s passion for fitness and youth sports and celebrate the enduring legacy of hometown hero, Roger Maris.
The list of events during Roger Maris All-Star week includes:
• Youth sports clinics– June 15-19
• RedHawks game – June 15
• Roger Maris Gala – June 17
• Edith 9-Hole Golf Tournament – June 18
• Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament – June 18
• Roger Maris All-Star Week Radiothon – June 18
• Maris Academy – June 19

Youth clinics this year include basketball, football, baseball and softball, golf, hockey, volleyball and pickleball. Each clinic is free to attend and will be conducted by local, high school and collegiate coaches. Parents can sign their children up for the free clinics at RogerMarisWeek.com.

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will play host to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Monday, June 15. Sanford Health is a proud sponsor of “Roger Maris Cancer Center Night”.

The Roger Maris Gala takes place on Wednesday, June 17, from 6-10 p.m. at The 44 Venue, 15 Main Ave., Colfax, N.D. The Gala is a night to celebrate the tradition of philanthropy at Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. Event goers will hear local stories of hope and healing, as well as hear an update on exclusive plans for the next era of cancer care for patients in the Upper Midwest and their families who need care close to home. Tickets and tables are available to be purchased at rogermarisgala.com. 100% of funds raised during the Roger Maris Gala will support the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center’s vision to become a national destination for cancer research, treatment, education and training.

The second annual Edith Sanford 9-Hole Golf Tournament presented by Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops tees off at 8 a.m. at Rose Creek Golf Course. This pink-themed event will help support innovative breast cancer research and patient care. The Edith Sanford 9-hole tournament will feature specialty coffee, a photo station, contests, swag bags and appearances by celebrities. Both men and women are encouraged to wear pink.

The Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament presented by Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops returns for a 42nd season, teeing off at 12 p.m. at Rose Creek Golf Course. The tournament began as a way to raise money for local charities. Now four decades later, the tournament has now transformed into a weeklong event supporting the needs of the community.

Celebrity athletes will once again make an appearance at numerous events throughout the week. This year’s lists of headlining athletes includes:

• Scott Hamilton, 1984 Olympic Gold Medal winner in men’s figure skating
• Chad Greenway, former Minnesota Vikings linebacker and two-time National Football League Pro Bowl selection
• Chris Klieman, Former North Dakota State University and Kansas State University head football coach
• Gene Taylor, former North Dakota State University and current Kansas State University director of athletics

“Our family is excited to get back to Fargo for another great week of sharing dad’s All-Star values in sports and life to the community,” said Roger Maris Jr. “Roger Maris All-Star Week is a great way to give back to the community while raising funds to provide the highest level of cancer care right here in Fargo. There is no better way for my dad’s legacy to live on than through the compassionate care, innovation and reputation of the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center.”

The Sanford Health Foundation is teaming up with The Mighty 790 KFGO to host the Roger Maris All-Star Week Radiothon. The radiothon is an event to raise awareness and monetary donations to support special services, patient amenities, funding for direct patient assistance and research at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. KFGO will be broadcasting live from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, inside CJ’s Tavern at Rose Creek Golf Course during the Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament.

The Roger Maris Academy is designed to be a year-long program to help youth in our community explore various pathways to a great career. Thirty local middle school students will participate in combined educational and mentorship opportunities designed to help them discover their future careers. The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Red River Valley, in partnership with Sanford Health and the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber, has developed an exciting curriculum for the program. The Maris Academy meets Friday, June 19, at Kingpinz.

In 1961, Roger Maris hit a Major League Baseball single-season record 61 home runs. Although Maris lost his battle to non-Hodgkin Lymphoma at the age of 51, his legacy lives on through Roger Maris All-Star Week and the lifesaving care provided at the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. Since opening its doors in 1990, the comprehensive cancer center has and continues to bring hope to those in and around the region.

We’re grateful to Intersport for their partnership and helping to create what will be another tremendous event.”

Launched in 2024, the State Farm Women’s Volleyball Showcase shines a national spotlight on the start of the college volleyball season through elite competition, premium television exposure and standout non-conference matchups.

The event continues to feature premier programs and compelling early-season matchups in a marquee neutral-site setting, with previous fields including Texas, Penn State, Wisconsin, Stanford and Pitt. The 2026 edition will bring five nationally recognized programs to Sioux Falls for a weekend of high-level competition at one of college volleyball’s signature opening-week events.

“Now in its third year, the State Farm Women’s Volleyball Showcase has quickly become a tremendous early-season tradition, and we’re excited to continue building on that momentum alongside our partners at FOX,” said Mark Starsiak, senior vice president at Intersport. “This year’s field features some of the most recognized and accomplished programs in college volleyball, and the Sanford Pentagon provides a first-class venue in a city that has consistently shown its ability to rally behind major events. We look forward to another exciting atmosphere to help open the 2026 college volleyball season.”

Arizona State
JJ Van Niel has quickly elevated Arizona State into a national contender, leading the Sun Devils to back-to-back Big 12 championships in 2024 and 2025, the only two conference titles in program history. Van Niel also earned conference Coach of the Year honors in each of his first three seasons, becoming one of just three coaches in NCAA volleyball history to accomplish that feat.

Arizona State has reached the NCAA tournament in all three seasons under Van Niel, including two Sweet 16 appearances in the last three years, after the program had never won two postseason matches before 2023.

The 2023-25 stretch represents the best run in program history, producing the top three seasons in ASU history by winning percentage and three of the program’s best win totals, including 30 wins in 2024 and 28 wins in both 2023 and 2025.

The Sun Devils also participated in the 2025 edition of the event, splitting contests against No. 2 Penn State and No. 9 Pitt.

Arizona State owns a 2-1 all-time edge over Minnesota, with the series dating back to 1973. Minnesota won the most recent meeting, 3-1, on Dec. 2, 2000, in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Creighton
Brian Rosen, the AVCA’s 2024 National Assistant Coach of the Year, took over as Creighton’s head coach in 2025 and made immediate history with 28 wins, the most ever by a first-year Big East volleyball coach. Rosen also became the only coach in league history to win multiple NCAA tournament matches in his debut season.

Creighton went 28-6 in 2025, reached a second straight Elite Eight, finished No. 10 in the final AVCA poll and enters 2026 on a streak of 71 consecutive top-25 rankings.

The Bluejays remain one of the nation’s premier programs, with 12 straight Big East regular-season titles, 53 consecutive wins over league opponents, 14 straight NCAA tournament appearances and the nation’s third-most wins since 2021 with 147.

Creighton is one of just nine schools to reach the Sweet 16 in each of the last three seasons, and its 2026 matchup with USC will mark the 12th meeting between the programs since 2014.

Creighton owns a 2-1 all-time edge over Purdue, with the series dating back to Sept. 8, 2017. The Bluejays have won each of the last two meetings, including the most recent matchup, 3-1, on Sept. 20, 2024, in Lawrence, Kan. Creighton trails USC 7-4 in the all-time series, which dates back to Sept. 6, 2014. The Trojans won the most recent meeting, 3-0, on Sept. 7, 2025, in Los Angeles.

Minnesota
Head coach Keegan Cook enters his fourth season at Minnesota in 2026 after being hired Dec. 12, 2022.

Cook has led the Gophers to a 62-34 overall record and a 37-23 Big Ten mark through his first three seasons, with NCAA tournament berths in all three years.

Minnesota went 24-10 in 2025 despite losing four starters to season-ending injuries early in the year, relying heavily on five freshman starters while still finishing sixth in the Big Ten.

The Gophers earned a top-16 seed in the NCAA tournament in 2025, hosted the first two rounds, advanced to the Sweet 16 and finished No. 15 in the final AVCA rankings. Cook was named AVCA Northwest Region Coach of the Year.

Minnesota, which also took part in the 2024 edition of the event, remains one of the nation’s most consistent programs, with 11 straight NCAA tournament appearances, 31 consecutive winning seasons, 21 Sweet 16 trips, 10 Elite Eight appearances and six Final Four berths.

Minnesota owns a 5-2 all-time edge over Creighton, with the series dating back to Nov. 21, 1980. Creighton has won each of the last two meetings, including the most recent matchup, 3-0, on Dec. 2, 2023, in Omaha, Neb.

Purdue
Purdue is coming off a 27-7 season that included a 15-5 mark in Big Ten play, a third-place conference finish, a regional final appearance and a No. 8 final AVCA ranking.

Purdue returns one of the nation’s most decorated groups, including all three of its 2025 All-Americans: Taylor Anderson, Kenna Wollard and Grace Heaney. Anderson, a second-team All-American, led the nation in assists in 2025, while Wollard, also a second-team All-American, was an AVCA National Player of the Year semifinalist and finished seventh nationally in kills with the third-highest single-season total in Purdue history. Heaney earned third-team All-America honors.

The Boilermakers also return four All-Big Ten selections, tied with Nebraska and USC for the most in the conference.

Purdue added sophomore OH Mimi Mambu and senior MB Kate Hansen through the transfer portal and will welcome eight freshmen this fall, including four redshirt freshmen and four true freshmen who could compete for time on the court.

Purdue has been ranked in the AVCA poll for 143 consecutive weeks.

Purdue trails Creighton, 2-1, in the all-time series, which dates back to Sept. 8, 2017. The Boilermakers won the first meeting, 3-1, before the Bluejays took each of the last two matchups, including a 3-1 decision on Sept. 20, 2024, in Lawrence, Kan.

USC
Seventh-year head coach Brad Keller led USC to its fourth consecutive NCAA tournament berth in 2025 and guided the Women of Troy to a No. 14 AVCA midseason ranking, the highest of his tenure. Keller recorded his third 20-win season in four years, reached 100 career wins last fall and enters 2026 with 110 victories at USC.

USC finished 25-7 in 2025, including a 15-5 mark in Big Ten play to tie for third in the conference standings. The Trojans reached 20 wins for the 36th time in program history, posted their most wins since 2017, set a new home attendance record, recorded 18 matches with double-digit blocks and earned 11 Big Ten Player of the Week awards.

USC owns six national championships, including three NCAA titles in 1981, 2002 and 2003, and three AIAW championships in 1976, 1977 and 1980. The Trojans won the inaugural NCAA championship in 1981, claimed back-to-back NCAA titles under Mick Haley in 2002 and 2003, and have appeared in all but four of the NCAA’s 45 annual championship tournaments.

The Women of Troy return a strong core in 2026, led by OH London Wijay, a unanimous All-Big Ten first-team selection. MB Leah Ford and LIB Taylor Deckert return after earning second-team All-Big Ten honors, while OPP Abigail Mullen is back after being named to the 2025 Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

USC owns a 63-14-1 all-time edge over Arizona State, with the series dating back to 1977. The Trojans won the most recent meeting, 3-0, on Nov. 5, 2023, in Los Angeles. USC also owns a 7-4 all-time edge over Creighton, with the series dating back to Sept. 6, 2014. The Trojans won the most recent meeting, 3-0, on Sept. 7, 2025, in Los Angeles.

Marshfield Clinic donates funds to support local food bank

MARSHFIELD, Wis. – Marshfield Clinic has donated $85,000 to Feed My People Food Bank (FMP) in Eau Claire allowing the organization to purchase a refrigerated van to distribute food to surrounding communities.

FMP rescues nationally and regionally donated food from manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and growers that might otherwise be thrown away. Most of this nutritious food passes through its 46,370 square foot distribution center in Eau Claire before being distributed to over 250 hunger-relief programs throughout west central Wisconsin. To safely distribute this food, FMP needed a refrigerated van.

“This was a complete collaboration of the Community Benefits team reaching out to community organizations that were involved with food insecurity efforts and a relationship that developed with Feed My People,” said Jill Niemczyk, a health educator for Marshfield Clinic’s Center for Community Health Advancement. “Feed my People works with multiple area food pantries and these pantries could benefit from having a refrigerated van to help recover and transport food to surrounding communities.”

FMP partners with more than 250 hunger-relief programs across west central Wisconsin and distributes over 8.8 million pounds of food each year. This network includes local food pantries, meal sites, and other community-based programs that provide food directly to people in need. FMP sources, stores, and distributes food through its Eau Claire facility, with agency partners ordering products for their programs and receiving regular deliveries through the food bank’s fleet. The refrigerated van will strengthen this network by giving partner agencies flexible access to safely transport perishable food from local donation sites to their own facilities, expanding their ability to recover and utilize fresh food independently.

“Serving people across our 14-county, 15,000+ square mile region means we rely on dependable vehicles to get food where it needs to go safely,” said Brit Heymans, Development Director for Feed My People. “We’re so grateful to Marshfield Clinic for supporting us through a gift of funding that made it possible to purchase a refrigerated van for partner use, and for their commitment to addressing food insecurity.”

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. and ROBBINSDALE, Minn. Sanford Health, the nation’s leading rural nonprofit health system dedicated to transforming the health care experience, and North Memorial Health, a nonprofit health system based in the Twin Cities focused on empowering patients to achieve their best health, have signed a definitive agreement to come together as a single nonprofit health system – advancing their shared commitment to improving health, ensuring long-term financial sustainability and broadening access to care throughout the region.

“Today marks an important step forward as we build on and expand the care we provide across Minnesota – creating more choice for patients and connecting them to a broader network of providers, services and specialized expertise,” said Bill Gassen, president and chief executive officer of Sanford Health. “By coming together as one nonprofit health care organization, with shared Midwest values and a deep commitment to the communities we serve, we will deliver more coordinated, regionally connected care – ensuring patients can access the right services, in the right place, at the right time.”

“Guided by our charitable mission, we are committed to meeting the evolving health care needs of the region – including sustaining Robbinsdale Hospital as a critical safety-net provider of Level 1 trauma and emergency services and investing in expanded capacity and outpatient care at Maple Grove Hospital to meet rising demand in one of the metro’s fastest-growing communities. Our approach is to partner with local leaders, understand community needs and invest for the long term. Together, we will strengthen locally driven care for generations to come,” Gassen added.

“When we first met Sanford Health, it was clear we share the same values – rooted in our communities, putting patients first and being straightforward about the realities health care faces,” said Trevor Sawallish, chief executive officer of North Memorial Health. “We’ve been open about the financial and regulatory pressures and the rising costs that make it harder to protect access to care on our own. Through a deliberate national search, Sanford stood out as a partner who understands our true value and shares our belief that better – not just bigger – is what matters. This partnership is about staying strong for the long term – so our patients can keep getting the care they need close to home and our teams have the support they deserve.”

“As one system we will be better equipped to invest in expanded services and new technologies, navigate unexpected headwinds and build a stronger workforce pipeline,” Gassen added. “Our history of combining with like-minded health systems has shaped who we are today – and demonstrates how we can learn from one another to improve care, strengthen resilience and deliver greater impact for patients and communities.”

Sanford Health has a long-established commitment to serving communities across Minnesota. Today, the nonprofit health system cares for nearly 300,000 patients annually and employs close to 10,000 team members in the state. Sanford Health operates or has affiliation agreements with 20 medical centers and 74 clinics across the western third of the state – from International Falls to Bemidji, Thief River Falls and Worthington.

By coming together, the single nonprofit health system will:

  • Modernize and sustain Level 1 trauma and emergency services at North Memorial Health – Robbinsdale Hospital, a critical safety-net hospital and a cornerstone of care in the community, where financial pressures threaten long-term sustainability. Both organizations bring deep expertise in trauma care – collectively operating three Level 1 trauma centers – and, as one system, will ensure continued access to these essential services for the underserved and underrepresented populations who depend on them.
  • Double the size of North Memorial Health – Maple Grove Hospital, growing Minnesota’s largest birth center, expanding emergency care and adding inpatient and surgical capacity, while improving access to cardiology and interventional radiology to support minimally invasive procedures. To meet rising demand in the northwest metro and central Minnesota, the combined system will also expand campus access to primary and specialty care for patients of all ages.
  • Serve as the backbone of Minnesota’s EMS system connecting patients across rural and urban communities to lifesaving care when and where they need it most – by bringing together both systems’ Level I trauma centers, North Memorial Health’s statewide, hospital-based ground and air EMS program and Sanford Health’s AirMed transport.
  • Expand convenient access to expert care, connecting patients to the right specialists at the right time through Sanford Health’s $350 million virtual care initiative across 80 specialties – reducing barriers to care such as travel, time away from work and caregiving responsibilities.
  • Expand access to critical mental health services, including integrating behavioral health specialists into primary care and offering self-scheduling options for virtual behavioral health visits, ensuring patients receive timely care when it matters most.
  • Accelerate clinical innovation and new care models by advancing personalized medicine – including genetic testing and counseling – to identify and treat cancer and chronic disease earlier, tailor care and improve health outcomes.
  • Expand access to cutting-edge therapies and treatments through more than 1,000 active clinical trials led by Sanford Research.
  • Deliver greater impact through community partnerships that address social drivers of health – including housing, transportation and access to healthy food – supporting underserved populations and improving health across rural, urban and Indigenous communities, with initiatives like wellness pantries in primary care clinics to address food insecurity.
  • Improve affordability by expanding future coverage options through Sanford Health Plan, a nonprofit provider-aligned plan focused on simplifying care, improving outcomes and lowering costs.
  • Attract, develop and retain top talent in Minnesota by serving as an employer of choice – fostering a strong culture, investing in well-being and leadership development opportunities and expanding career pathways across the state and the broader organization.
  • Train the next generation of physicians and clinicians through Sanford Health’s 40 graduate medical education programs and building on the strong training partnerships at North Memorial Health – growing the workforce locally, with many choosing to stay and practice in the communities where they train.
  • Work in close alignment with independent and affiliate providers who play a critical role in delivering specialized care for patients, while fostering a shared sense of purpose and commitment to high-quality patient care.

Post-closing, the single health system will remain a nonprofit charitable organization committed to improving the health of communities.

North Memorial Health will become the anchor of a new care delivery region for Sanford Health in the Twin Cities. The region includes:

  • Two leading medical centers, including one of five Level 1 Trauma Centers in the state of Minnesota
  • Best-in-class programs in areas such as birth, stroke and trauma care
  • Expansive care delivery network of more than 22 clinics offering primary care and more than 45 specialties
  • 450 physicians and advanced practice providers and 6,800 team members

Local physician leadership will remain central, with structured representation on governing boards, ensuring clinicians have a strong voice in how care is delivered and the autonomy to shape standards, care pathways and professional practice matters.

The Twin Cities region of Sanford Health will continue to be led by Trevor Sawallish, chief executive officer of North Memorial Health, with a local board of directors representing the broader community to provide oversight, including medical staff matters

Two North Memorial Health board members will transition to serve on the Sanford Health Board of Trustees, the governing body of the combined system. They include Charlie Weaver, a seasoned executive, attorney and public policy leader who served for 20 years as executive director of the Minnesota Business Partnership, and Reuben Moore, a longtime health care executive who currently serves as president and chief executive officer of Minnesota Community Care, one of the largest federally qualified health centers in the state.

Sanford Health President and CEO Bill Gassen will continue to serve as president and chief executive officer of the combined organization, alongside the current executive team.

The partnership is expected to close sometime this year, subject to completion of regulatory processes and other customary closing conditions.

FARGO, N.D. – The fourth annual Swing Training event returns to Suite Shots on Wednesday, May 13, from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Swing Training is Sanford Health Fargo’s official kickoff event to the sixth annual Roger Maris All-Star Week.

Teams of up to six players can register to play a custom “61” game where each team can play a variety of games and get 61 swings to accumulate points. 100% of funds raised benefits the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center. Former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway, North Dakota State head men’s basketball coach David Richman, North Dakota State head women’s basketball coach Jory Collins and Roger Maris Jr. will be at the event and taking part in the custom games.

The list of events includes:
• 2:30 p.m. – Team check-in
• 2:45 p.m. – Press conference
• 3 p.m. – Ceremonial swing and start of games
• 4:30 p.m. – Social and Q & A

Event goers will also be able to use their phones to sign up for the 42nd annual Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament presented by Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops. This year’s golf tournament takes place on Thursday, June 18, from Rose Creek Golf Course, 150 E. Rose Creek Pkwy S., Fargo. The golf tournament will feature a nine-hole round in the morning and an 18-hole round in the afternoon.

Sanford Fargo is performing autologous transplants, meaning the patients donated their own cells for processing and transplant, as well as allogeneic bone marrow transplants, where cells are taken from a healthy donor’s bone marrow for a transplant. In 2023, Sanford Fargo began CAR T therapy, where genetically modified T cells are infused.

The sixth annual Roger Maris All-Star Week takes place June 15-19 and includes free youth sports clinics, Edith 9-hole Golf Tournament, Roger Maris Celebrity Golf Tournament and the Roger Maris All-Star Week Radiothon.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. —Eight Sanford Health hospital locations across four states have been recognized for their dedication to heart patients by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in the ACC advertising insert in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” Guidebook.

Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls and Prairie Lakes Healthcare System in Watertown were honored in South Dakota, while Sanford Medical Center Fargo and Sanford Medical Center Bismarck were recognized in North Dakota. Sanford Bemidji Medical Center was honored in Minnesota, along with three hospitals in Wisconsin: Marshfield Medical Center, Marshfield Medical Center – Weston, and Marshfield Medical Center – Eau Claire.

All eight hospital locations are committed to providing top-level care. Through participation in the ACC’s proven quality programs, they inform their robust quality improvement processes using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart patients.

“We are honored, once again, to be recognized by the American College of Cardiology,” said Dr. Jeremy Cauwels, Sanford Health chief medical officer. “With eight of our Sanford Health hospitals across four states honored by the ACC, it reflects our commitment to deliver world-class care across our regional footprint. This recognition wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our outstanding caregivers devoted to the health, safety, and well-being of our heart patients.”
