How often should my baby move?

You are 28 weeks pregnant and officially in the third trimester! It is time for you to start really paying attention to your baby’s movements to ensure they are happy and healthy. Your provider will start talking to you about “fetal kick counts.” What does this mean and how do you keep track?

  • Try to practice fetal kick counts around the same time each day, preferably when your baby is the most active.
  • Find a quiet place to sit with your feet up or lie on your side. Place one hand on your abdomen and count each fetal movement. This could be a kick, flick or glide of the hand. Each movement counts! You are looking for your baby to make 10 movements in an hour.
  • Normally, it will take less than a half hour to feel your baby move 10 times. However, by doing this exercise every day, you are learning what activity level is normal for your baby. If baby’s “normal” changes significantly, you should notify your provider.
  • As your baby grows, you will notice movements and activity levels may vary from day to day. If you do not feel 10 movements in an hour, try eating a snack or drinking something cold. If ever you do not feel your baby move 10 times in a two-hour period, call your provider. Do not wait!

Enjoy this daily timeout with your baby. Reflect on all that you’ve been through together and delight in all the adventures that lie ahead!
