Sanford Bismarck and the Sanford Health Foundation unveiled the Sanford David D. Miller Surgery Center, recognizing the extraordinary generosity and lasting impact of longtime donor David Miller.
Formerly known as the Sanford Broadway Same Day Surgery Center, the facility was renamed in honor of Miller’s more than $3 million in philanthropic support of nursing education and surgical services at Sanford Health.
A special ceremony held Sept. 17 brought together Sanford leaders, caregivers, community members and supporters to celebrate Miller’s commitment to advancing healthcare and improving the lives of patients across the region.
“David Miller’s generosity has made a meaningful and lasting difference for our patients, caregivers and communities,” said Sara Haugen, vice president, Sanford Health Foundation in Bismarck. “His support has helped strengthen surgical services, invest in nursing education and ensure future generations have access to high-quality care. We are honored to recognize his remarkable legacy through the naming of the David D. Miller Surgery Center.”
Commitment to nursing education
Miller grew up near Killdeer, North Dakota, and started his nursing education at what was then the Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army as an emergency room nurse at a military hospital in Vietnam. Later, as a civilian, he worked as an operating room nurse and nurse anesthetist in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.

Miller’s gifts have helped advance key initiatives that support patient care while investing in the future healthcare workforce. His commitment to nursing education has helped prepare the next generation of caregivers, while his support of surgical services has enhanced Sanford Health’s ability to provide exceptional care close to home.
The newly named Sanford David D. Miller Surgery Center stands as a lasting tribute to the power of philanthropy and the difference one individual can make in the lives of countless patients and families.

The Sanford Health Bismarck Region provides healthcare to central and western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northern South Dakota. It includes 26 clinics in Bismarck, Mandan, Minot, Dickinson, Williston and Watford City, as well as a Level II trauma center located in Bismarck.
