Sanford Health News earns first regional Emmy award

Sanford Health News has earned its first regional Emmy, recognizing excellence in video storytelling in the upper Midwest.

Sanford Health News has been nominated six times for Midwest Emmys over the last three years. Award recipients were announced at a ceremony Oct. 14 in Minneapolis.

Winning a regional Emmy in the Military – Short/Long Form Content category is “Veterans, college students revive broken down ‘cool bus.’” Reporter Matt Holsen and videographer Lonnie Nichols were nominated twice in this category this year.

The story follows Capt. Paul Weckman, head of military and veteran affairs at Sanford Health, as he teams up with Southeast Technical College to surprise local nonprofit Wings of Valor with a new-to-them mode of accessible transportation.

Sanford Health is dedicated to giving current and past military members exceptional care and employment opportunities. Sanford works to support veterans and current military members with programs designed to meet their care needs. These include Sanford Veterans Clubs at medical centers, a Veteran Ambassador Program and a Veteran Hotline. Sanford also has been recognized by Military Times as one of the best employers across the country for veterans.

Sanford Health News was nominated for four Midwest Emmys in 2023. In addition to the “cool bus” story, they are:

Nichols and Holsen produced each story and were joined in one nomination by SHN director Ann Nachtigal and videographer Max Jensen.

“We will celebrate this honor and then get back to the work we all feel so lucky to do,” Nachtigal said. “We’re grateful to share other people’s stories and work for a company like Sanford Health that understands the value of powerful storytelling.”

The Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is a membership organization dedicated to excellence in video and television by honoring exceptional work, past and present; providing professional development and outreach; and nurturing the next generation of television professionals.

The Upper Midwest Chapter, based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, represents professionals in local television and media production from Minnesota, Iowa, western Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota.
