FARGO, N.D. – Sanford will celebrate the opening of its new hospital with a ribbon cutting celebration on July 24, one day before opening to patients at 5 a.m. on July 25. The ribbon cutting signifies the completion of over a decade of planning and construction on the $494 million, 284-bed medical center.
“We made a promise to build a new medical center to serve the needs of our growing city and region,” said Paul Richard, executive vice president of Sanford Fargo. “This is a significant day as we are ready to open our new hospital to deliver care to those in our community and the entire region.”
Services offered and departments housed at the new hospital include:
- Emergency department
- Family Birth Center
- Children’s Hospital
- Brain and spine surgery
- Heart surgery and cardiology
- Trauma surgery
The opening of the new medical center signals changes for the other Sanford Fargo medical centers – as both Sanford Medical Center Broadway and Sanford South University will remain open, but will see a shift in services over the coming months. All clinic locations will remain the same. The Emergency Department currently located at the Broadway campus will move to the new medical center, but the space downtown will offer urgent care/walk-in services later this summer.
A strategic move plan is in place to transfer certain patients from Sanford’s downtown hospital to the new campus if that department is relocated out to the new site. Sanford worked hard to ensure most patients won’t move and can be discharged from their current location. Fewer than 70 patients will be moved.
“With this new hospital, we’ll continue the work we’ve been doing for more than a hundred years in Fargo, but we’ll do so in our newest addition. We’ll welcome new babies, work to save the lives of those afflicted by trauma and care for the ill,” Richard said. “This is the future of health care. This is the future of Sanford.”
