In recognition of Mike Miller’s outstanding efforts in the community and for his ongoing philanthropic work, the NBA announced today it has honored the Memphis Grizzlies forward with the Community Assist Award for May.
On May 23, Miller, a South Dakota native made a $1 million donation to establish the Mike and Jennifer Miller Endowment Fund to support the Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Sanford Health has named its soon to be built pediatric intensive care unit the Mike and Jennifer Miller Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in recognition of the donation and the Miller’s consistent work with the hospital. Expected to be completed in 2009, the new building will provide inpatient, outpatient and clinic services for pediatric patients and their families in a family-centered environment designed to meet the unique healing needs of children.
“I am blessed to have the opportunity to contribute to the Sanford Children’s Hospital during its groundbreaking phase,” said Miller. “The gift not only reflects a continuing commitment to my home state of South Dakota, but also acts as a reminder for my enormous good fortune in having two happy and healthy sons. Hopefully in this small way I can spread my blessings to others in need.”
During both the NBA season and off-season, Miller participates in many charitable and volunteer efforts including work though his Mike Miller Foundation. The foundation encourages kids to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, and provides aid to disadvantaged or disabled children, in addition to hosting an annual weekend-long charity event to raise funds to support the foundation.
As the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award, Miller will receive the David Robinson Plaque with the inscription, “Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece.” In addition to the plaque, a $5,000 donation will be given to the charity of Miller’s choice.
The league presents the NBA Community Assist Award monthly to recognize players for their charitable efforts. The award honors the NBA player who reflects the passion that the league and its players have for giving back to their communities.
