FARGO, N.D., March 9, 2021 – Sanford Health, Edgewood Healthcare and Legacy Medical are collaborating to provide COVID-19 testing for the 2021 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Frozen Faceoff. The winner of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff will earn the conference’s automatic qualification to the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship.

The NCHC Frozen Faceoff runs from March 12-16 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Players, coaches and staff begin testing on Wednesday, March 10. Testing will include both PCR and Antigen tests. The turnaround time from collection to test results is about four hours for PCR tests and 15 minutes for Antigen tests. Sanford Health and Legacy Medical estimates it will run over 1,000 COVID-19 tests during a seven-day stretch of the event.

“COVID-19 testing will play an important role in this year’s NCHC Frozen Faceoff,” said Dr. Lisa Jamsa-Tollefson, Sanford Health co-testing director for the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. “The fast turnaround times will help each team follow the proper safety protocols necessary for a successful tournament.”

“We are privileged in playing a role to help allow the NCHC Frozen Faceoff to be played on schedule,” said Jill Wilson, Legacy Medical chief operating officer. “It’s been a trying year for everyone. Having a tournament of this nature be played helps bring a sense of normalcy we haven’t experienced in some time.”

“The NCHC is appreciative of the COVID-19 testing administration provided by Sanford Health and Legacy Medical for the 2021 Frozen Faceoff,” said Josh Fenton, NCHC Commissioner. “Our highest priority is providing a safe tournament experience for our participating teams and our working relationship with both entities will give us the best chance for success.”

Sanford Health has also served as the official COVID-19 testing partner of the PGA Tour and the 2021 NBA All-Star Game.
