SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
Sanford Center for Digestive Health, on the campus of the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, recently received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education as a gastroenterology (GI) fellowship program, the only program of its kind in the Dakotas.

The new gastroenterology fellowship is part of the educational investment in students, residents and fellows funded by a generous gift from Mr. Denny Sanford, and is part of Sanford Health’s continuing effort to grow its own providers within its footprint.

Jeffrey Murray, M.D., a gastroenterologist at Sanford Health, will oversee the fellowship curriculum, clinical learning experiences, faculty development and supervision of gastroenterology fellows.

“We are literally going to be producing gastroenterologists right here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota,” said Dr. Murray. “This is the next step in establishing Sanford Health as the destination for gastroenterology care as we become the premier rural health system in the country. This allows us to expertly train gastroenterologists who we hope will stay right here in South Dakota, at Sanford Health, and provide health care to the communities we are privileged to serve.”

In 2022, Sanford Health broke ground on a new Medical Building One (MB1) on the Sanford USD Medical Center campus which will house the Sanford Digestive Health Center.

MB1 is scheduled to open in the summer of 2024 and the GI fellowship program will welcome its first fellows in July 2025.
