SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Sanford USD Medical Center has been recognized as one of Money’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery 2025. Sanford is the only hospital in South Dakota recognized on the list.
The list recognizes 75 hospitals across the country for their excellence in bariatric care. Exceptional outcomes, patient satisfaction and safety records are key indicators of quality in this specialty. To be considered among the nation’s top facilities for bariatric care, a hospital must have met key standards of care that demonstrate it specializes in performing high-quality weight loss surgeries.
“We offer a variety of bariatric surgery options that cater to patient’s individual health care needs,” said Morgan Feenstra, bariatric coordinator for Sanford USD Medical Center’s bariatric program. “Different surgery options may include the duodenal switch, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy as well as revisional surgery and management of the lap band. We individualize care for each patient so the patient, along with the surgeon, chooses the best option for them. Obesity-related comorbidities like hypertension, acid reflux or infertility can really improve and sometimes resolve completely as a result of weight loss surgery. Our goal with surgery is to improve the health and quality of life for each of our patients – the weight loss is a bonus side effect.”
The bariatric surgery program at Sanford in Sioux Falls offers a variety of additional resources for patients undergoing weight loss surgery, including health coaching and support, individual and group nutritional classes, exercise options, meal replacements and support groups.
