BISMARCK, N.D. (April 5, 2024) — Sanford Bismarck Medical Center has been recognized as a Blue Distinction Center for maternity care by Blue Cross Blue Shield.

According to Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) for maternity care demonstrate expertise and a commitment to quality care for vaginal and cesarean section deliveries. These centers demonstrate better overall patient satisfaction and a lower percentage of early elective deliveries.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a Blue Distinction Center for maternity care,” said Todd Schaffer, M.D., president and CEO of Sanford Bismarck. “This acknowledgment underscores our ongoing commitment to providing the highest level of care for mothers and their newborns, and is a testament to our team’s hard work and devotion to our patients.

The BDC for maternity care program evaluates healthcare facilities that offer maternity services for adult patients 18-years or older. BDC facilities are recognized for their expertise in delivery specialty care.

“We are so proud of our team’s commitment and unwavering pursuit of excellence,” said Jada Shoemaker, vice president of operations, Sanford Bismarck. “Every aspect of our Family Birth Center has been meticulously crafted to ensure the utmost comfort for our patients and their families. This accolade reaffirms our commitment to providing exceptional care and support during this special journey of welcoming new life into the world.”

Sanford Health completed renovations for the Sanford Family Birth Center in fall 2022, as well as opened a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in summer 2020. Sanford’s NICU is the only one in the region with private rooms, allowing families to stay in the same room.
