Legends for Kids program announces changes amid COVID-19

SIOUX FALLS, S.D., June 4, 2020 — The health and safety of the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, community remains a top priority for Sanford Health and Hy-Vee Foods through the COVID-19 pandemic. In alignment with guidelines from the CDC and Sanford Health, the Hy-Vee/Sanford Legends for Kids Board of Directors has chosen to make some changes to this year’s Legends event.
The 2020 – New Look Hy-Vee/Sanford Legends event will be composed of the following:
Virtual banquet, live and silent auctions
7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6
Available for the first time via Facebook Live, the banquet will include visits from Folds of Honor Founder and President, Lt. Col Dan Rooney and celebrity athletes, including Philadelphia Eagles Carson Wentz and Dallas Goedert and three-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Cullen. The event will also include a live and silent auction, opening one week before the banquet.
Legends golf event
9 am. – 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7
This event will take place as planned, spread throughout four local courses: Bakker Crossing, Willow Run, Brandon Valley and Rocky Run. The Legends program will adhere to the multiple safety measures already in place at each golf course location.
The football camp and free sports clinics will not take place this year.
Scholarship program
The Hy-Vee/Sanford Legends program provides learning opportunities for young student-athletes to grow and be inspired in the world of sports by providing different sporting clinics and camps. Each year, celebrity athletes who represent the Legends goals — quality, integrity and character — are brought to Sioux Falls.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019, the Hy-Vee/Sanford Legends events set a new profit record with $255,000 raised for local youth sports organizations. Total donations from 2019 pushed the amount donated since 2005 to $2.35 million.
Legends is continuing its scholarship program in 2020. The Legends for Kids Scholarship is a $5,000 award given to 10 outstanding graduating seniors who have demonstrated exceptional character and leadership in athletics, school and community involvement. The scholarship program was created by Hy-Vee, Sanford, First PREMIER and other valuable sponsors to be used for post-secondary education.
