Latest in cancer treatment technology installed at Sanford Worthington
Radiation treatment for cancer now available in Southwest Minnesota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Sanford Worthington is currently installing a TrueBeam linear accelerator for enhanced cancer treatment. The device delivers high-energy x-rays that conform to the specific size, shape and location of a tumor. It will give Sanford Health providers in Worthington the ability to target and destroy cancerous cells in a precise area of the body, with minimal exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

“Our goal at Sanford Worthington is to always provide the best possible care for our patients – and to do it close to home,” said Jennifer Weg, Sanford Worthington executive director. “We know that treating cancer can be a long process that requires multiple appointments. This investment will save our patients a lot of travel time.”

The linear accelerator will also cut treatment time for some patients, while offering enhanced imagining. The number of treatments required is also often decreased through the use of a linear accelerator The accuracy of the system is impressive with measurements accurate to a fraction of a millimeter.

“Accuracy is extremely critical when fighting tumors near organs like the heart or lungs,” added Weg. “That is another reason why we’ve chosen to install this new technology. We know our patients will have optimal outcomes.”

The linear accelerator comes with a $3.4 million price tag.
