Sanford Health pledges gift to Worthington athletic facility
WORTHINGTON, Minnesota — Worthington’s Trojan Field will receive a major face-lift and become ADA compliant thanks, in part, to a gift from Sanford Health.
Sanford has agreed to a $1 million donation to Worthington’s Independent School District 518. The gift will be used to renovate Trojan Field with amenities including a new stadium and athletic field with artificial turf, nine-lane track, new bleachers, new scoreboard, a play clock, concession area and a total remodel of the existing field house.
“This remodel and renovation will once again make Trojan Field a jewel that District 518 and the Worthington area can be proud to utilize. People from outside the community will attend contests and events and leave with a positive feeling about ISD 518 and the Worthington community,” said Brad Shaffer, Independent School District 518 school board chair. “We truly appreciate the commitment and dedication from Sanford Health that will help us achieve this goal.”
“Sanford Health has always believed in investing in the communities it serves,” said Jennifer Weg, executive director of Sanford Worthington. “This gift is a perfect complement to our expanding orthopedics and sports medicine program. We couldn’t be more proud to support this community while enhancing the student athlete experience.”
As the exclusive sports medicine providers for the Worthington Trojans, Sanford Health will add an additional athletic trainer to support Worthington’s student athletes.
“This is a remarkable partnership that further solidifies the important community role that both ISD 518 and Sanford Health play in the Worthington area,” said Josh Dale, activities director at ISD 518. “With this partnership, Worthington is leading the way as an example of how a community can work to grow together.”
Construction on Trojan Field will begin in the spring, with completion by September 2020. After completion, the facility will be home to several Worthington Trojan athletic teams, the Minnesota West Bluejay football team and many YMCA programs. Minnesota West Community and Technical College also recently pledged $250,000 to the project and named Trojan Field as the home for its football and soccer programs.
